he's absolutely right. a 45 million buy out just locks him in at relatively low wages for the duration of the contract.

If you sign a contract aren't you locking yourself into a wage for the duration of that contract anyway? I thought that was kind of the point...

Yes, but if the transfer fee is set ridiculously high then you don't have many options to leave.

There's always a question of power. Sometimes the players have too much power and can leave despite signing a long contract if they throw their toys out the pram enough. In other cases the clubs hold all the cards and young players careers are ruined before they've had a chance.

In this case a 5k wage with a 45m buyout is putting the cards in the club's hands and a young players is hardly to turn down such an offer when desperate to go pro. I think Dier is right to speak out on this occasion.

contracts get renegotiated all the time, and not just in sport. an absurd buy-out clause just stacks the deck for the club. like I said, if you have other options you shouldnt sign a contract like that.
