Does Hulk to Zenit = no Moutinho?

There's been a few suggestions that after missing out on Moutinho, the deal was eventually sorted after the transfer window closed, so we could have arranged for the deal to go through in January. Or at least we may be back in for him.

However, yesterday Porto sold Hulk to Zenit for about £32m.

Does this mean that they now have bundles of cash and will look to hold on to Moutinho even harder?

After all we wouldn't want to lose or two top players in quick succession!

What do you think?
Should we even be going back for the guy?
Live with what we've got or move on to another target?

You're right we'd never sell Modric and then say VdV in quick succession would we? (or Keane and Berba etc etc)

I believe a lot depends on Moutinho's attitude...he wants to work with AVB again. Okay, but how badly does he want to work with AVB? Badly enough to force a move through in January? Bad enough to jump at the move if it is resurrected, but if Porto just leave a sleeping dog to lie, he will too? Bad enough to be up for it, but if Beetroot Head goes in for him choose them above us?

I think that will be the deciding factor - we saw ourselves with the Mole-Rat what a player who decides he off can be like.

which other target, the other guy I would want was witsel he has gone and for too much for us

We clearly struggling to get people to come to us and accept our relatively low wages and if Levy was serious about getting him we should of got him earlier in the window

Levy has been leaving it late ever since that VDV deal and fuck all has come in since of the same stature, also we weren't desperate for VDV that year but it was a great addition we have been desperate for certain position for a while and levy simply cant leave it late with position where we have no cover

I think Porto are a selling club by nature, but i do also think that it was going to be either Hulk or Moutinho that left this summer, not both.

Frankly i think they will probably sell in Jan to us, but if we are doing well by that point i'm not sure Levy will sanction it.

It's part of Porto's business model to sell for top dollar and to reinvest some of it on buying three or four new starlets. Some would say it is our business model too

I guess it's difficult to form a strong opinion because most of it is speculation, but I wish we'd got him in August, for me I feel that was the opportunity, and now with this news of Porto selling Hulk I can't help thinking our chance might have gone.

It depends if they think they have the talent coming through or not, their league isn't quite the same as the premier league so they may feel they have enough to compete without them both. It's a lot to turn down that's for sure

.......but if we're doing badly then Moutinho might not want to come to us anyway - OR - AvB might not even be with us to tempt Mouts in the first place.

I hate to say it but i just can't see this happening now :-(

I read somewhere that Porto don't let players leave in January. Some Portuguese jorno stated it on his twitter page.

That ship has sailed. I hope we learn our lesson and don't waste any more time dealing with Porto (although nicking their head scout might be amusing and profitable). Plenty more fish in the sea ... Hector Herrera, Miralem Pjanic, Keisuke Honda to mention but a few. We need to see how Dembele fits in and decide what type of playmaker we need. We must do business this January as our squad is paper thin. Last chance for Leandro deal and to get decent money for the clearly not fit for purpose Defoe. A playmaker and a striker in January are essential if we are to achieve anything this season.
