Wondering if people think Chiriches will become a top CB in this league. He has good pace, superb timing in the tackle, good dribbling and distribution, and seems like a strong character. I think he has three weaknesses to overcome:

1. Physical strength/heading. We knew before he arrived that he didn't have the height or strength to battle big forwards for headers. Teams appear to be targeting him quite a bit with lobs. Also, he doesn't seem to be able to shove people off the ball very often.

2. Lingering on the ball and generally having less time than he thinks. I think this is an issue of adjustment to the pace and intensity of the premier league, which should be solved soon. Paulinho has problems with this too.

3. Following runs. Most worrying to me. Loses the players he's marking. Don't know if it's just Dawson not being the best partner at the back.

He's 23 yrs old and has just moved to a new country and different league, to a team in mid season crisis. He has had more good performances than bad. Give the guy time before you make such kneejerk judgements.

He reminds me of Luiz at Chelsea. Technically very good, but his decision making is pretty poor but which can be trained into him.

Luckily we have Les Ferdinand coaching him, so no worries.

He's very talented and very skillful no doubt - currently his positional sense is pretty poor and he doesn't seem great in the air

He will need time to settle in to a back four and of course to settle into his new team, environment and whole way of life

I think he can become a successful CB for us

Although I am not sure he's the type of centre back we should have signed. I thought we needed someone who offered us the skill set that Kaboul offers when fit and in form - If I'm honest I was disappointed we signed him instead of Sakho when Liverpool swooped for him

He and Dawson seem a pretty poor pairing and I fear he and Vertonghen may not be a perfect match either (although I do think Vlad would benefit greatly from playing on the right side of a pairing next to Verts)

He will certainly improve once he and the defensive unit in general is more settled and on the same wavelength - Lloris being a consistent World Class keeper again, Sandro or Capoue offerring better protection in front and playing next to Vertonghen instead of Dawson and a left back rather than a make shift

Personally I still think our best pairing is Kaboul and Vertonghen when everyone is fit and if I had been in charge of recruitment I'd have probably looked for someone more like Kaboul than Vlad - but a few dodgy games while the whole team has been pretty poor and the back line has been especially depleted are no reason to panic about this guy, he's shown more than enough ability in his early performances to prove he has the talent to be a success for us

He will come good I have little doubt

With him there is talent with an impending threat of disaster-couldn't get more suited to Spurs if he tried. We could coach the disaster out of him but what would be the fun in that?

I've said it before, but I reserve judgement on our new players until they've been organised and led by a quality manager

That goes doubly for the defenders at our club, who rely more on the solidity of their team-mates and the 'unit', as opposed to our more attacking players relying on their individual skill

He was great before his knee injury and a big part in our defensive record before it all went tits up. I like him. Plus he's a national captain so must have something.

Looks like a liability capable of the occasional good performance. Usually makes at least one monumental fuck up during a match, though recently he's raised his game to double figures.

Couldn't disagree more. He's had a few dodgy performances of late but I think he had been very good before considering he had just come to the PL. He's been our best signing IMO

Not sure why people think he had a great start. He looked all over the place in his first three performances for us, followed by a mix of great moments and big mistakes during a match, along with maybe two or three genuinely brilliant performances.

The good performances have been the exception - not the rule.

We'll agree to disagree then :pompous:
