Does WHL sap keeper confidence?

Really pleased to see Robbo playing well for Blackburn.
He pilled off some amazing saves and appears to have his confidence back.
Maybe if we stay of Gomes's back and support him, he will become invincible.

I don't think vocal support of robinson ever dwindled. I just think he'd totally lost his head for a bit and when Ramos came in he was under pressure and couldn't deliver. I don't think it had much to do with WHL or the fans, more to do with the pressure getting to him.

Going to Blackburn has given him a clean slate and he's really starting to get back to his best with less pressure. I don't believe he would've recovered at spurs.

i think the press played a indescribably enormous role in robbo's decline. they absolutely ruined him. they loved it when anything appeared to go wrong for him and it was across the board in both tabloid and broadsheet. the bbc even did it today taking relish in remarking that he is 'england's ex no. 1'. i really like the bloke and enjoyed seeing him on MOTD2 tonight so best of luck to him.

on gomes, i like him and think he's really good and will be really good for us. seems an enormous character and hopefully we won't ruin him. we've well got it in our powers, having ruined many a footballer and manager, let alone my many a mind, yet hopefully gomes will be okay.

I think there's alot of press pressure with the Spurs post.
I do think we normally manage to turn good goalies bad, but maybe it's just the make up of the squad.
Over the last 20 years people could run at our defence and get off a free shot from about 20 to 30 yards the only time that didn't happen was when we had Carrick.
Gomes is getting alot of unnecessary flak, hopefully he'll learn about the premiership and improve.

Our fans are very tough on players that make a few errors and lose confidence, rather than sing their names to show support, they have a tendancy to get on their backs and unfortunately this makes the situation far worse.

Did you not see Anelkas first goal yesterday where he stood there with his arms in the air while the ball trickled over the line... Same old Robbo..

for once, I actually think we were great with robbo, we always sang englands number 1 and supported him. Although I think there was alot of anti-robbo talk, it never filtered into I dunno moaning and groaning when he made a msitake and stuff.

Personally it was the press, he made a few mistakes and the press jumped on the guy with 2 feet and studs up and ripped him. Then Ramos dropped him and started rotating keepers (WTF), think it all just got to him.

H's out of the spotlight at Bckburn, I think you'll notice he is still not great at claiming the old crosses

I think it's a bit of a catch 22 situation with Gomes (and Robbo before him) The defence need a confident goalkeeper behind them and play better when there is one. Gomes knows our defence can be shaky so tries to be positive and on occasions takes the initiative in situations that really he should play by the book. He comes for crosses etc that he shouldn't because he doesn't think the defence can deal with them. When he then cocks it all up the defence start doubting his abilities and the same nervousness and doubts set in.

Someone in another thread mentioned that he rarely came off his line against City and they thought it was because Harry had given him instructions not to. I think this is probably true and you can see from the game that he was much more assured. He was possibly at fault for the first goal but he made several top class saves that kept us in the game and enabled us to go on and consequently win it.

Fix the defence and you'll fix the goalkeeper problem.

Robbo needed a new start. Bit like David James at Liverpool, had to go somewhere to rebuild his reputation. He is certainly not a bad keeper, but he was massively out of form, and every single mistake was highlighted.

Same sort of thing happened with Gomes. He could claim ten crosses but if he was a bit dodgy on one of them then thats the one that gets mentionned in the papers, on motd.

Would this thread be here if Robbo had got sent off for knocking Anelka off balance at 0-0?

Glad he left for his own form but really pleased to see him doing well and will always be one of my fav ex-players. Will still give him a England's No1 when he comes back to the Lane. Always seemed like a top bloke and he did buy an Opus as he loved us that much!!

Silly comment, I don't think he was expecting the ball to slow in the water thats why he started appealing for a free kick. It's not exactly a regular occurrence hence why Robbo didn't legislate for it.

I think our fans definitely have affected players performances before like most other sets of fans in the world.

4 games ago, whilst trying to defend Gomes on here, I posted the save ratio statistics of both him and Robbo to highlight their relevant abilities.

The best in the Prem have an 80% ratio, average is around 70%, and the worst 60%.

At the time it was Gomes around 70% and Robbo around 52%.

Now it is Gomes still around 70% and Robbo at 58%.

Robbo's 3 season average for us was around 60%, it's still pretty much 60% with Blackburn, and that is because he is a below average keeper.

Even with all his errors Gomes is still an average keeper, if he cut out the errrors he would be around 75% putting him in the top 5 or so.

The bottom line is that Gomes is a decent keeper with great potential whilst Robbo is no better despite a move to Blackburn and judging any player on a single display is a mistake.

Agree about the press' part in his decline. Was hoping having a non English keeper would mean less spot light on our keepers form.

Spot on!
It looked like handball too and was a wicked deflection. I have seen a number of great saves from Robbo this season and I am pleased for him.

However I do believe we have a keeper of greater potential. Ignore the Goon press he has made some outstanding saves for us this year. If anything we need to make sure that he does not have to make quite so many every match, by stopping the oppo from getting shots at goal. It has been like a shooting gallery at times this season!
