Apparently signing for Rotherham today, after previously being linked with Rangers and Leeds:

It shows again how ruthless Poch and McDermott now are with academy players when they get to 20/21 - they either go into the 25 or get sold. No more endless loaning them out till they are about 25, like use to happen

Ward (Ipswich), McEvoy (York), Coulthirst (Peterboro), Archer (Millwall), Hall (QPR) and Fredericks (Fulham) have all now suffered this fate in the past 12 months.

We may miss some gems like this but in all honesty it's better for the lads to know where they are at so that they can get on with their careers and be the best they can be. Much fairer way of doing things, better for the vibe of the club and i'm guessing the bottom-line!

Totally agree. I used to feel sorry for players like Simon Dawkins and Jon Obika who just seemed to get stuck in limbo for 3 or 4 seasons.

I think it's more an indication that Ball wasn't rated that highly, not necessarily a complete shift in policy.

Surprised he didn't go back to Rangers as was quite popular there?

With players around 18-21, you have to look both at those players ahead of them and those coming up behind them. Kane got his chance because those in front of him were crap, and he was the next cab off the rank with not much else behind him. Mason got his chance because those ahead were struggling, and there was a dearth of central midfielders in the youth behind him.

Pritchard had plenty in front of him so was loaned out, gets injured and then when he comes back there is a load of talented kids behind him. Ball isn't going to get first team games, CCV is the better young prospect, and there is talent in the years below him, so even if he did hang about for another couple of years there would be a choice between a 4/5th choice 23 yo or 4/5th choice 18yo, and Poch obviously prefers the latter scenario (rightfully so in my opinion)

If he was Spurs standard he would be signing for someone far better than Rotherham
