“They spent a lot of money and man-for-man I don’t think they’re any better than us"

Said Downing speaking from the West Ham Football Club training center:

Let the weekend decide that. We badly need to do the double over them after last season's nightmare results against that horrible lot.

It's his first half-decent season in 7 years, he can shut the fuck up.

“We don’t want to waste all the good work, and all the top teams we’ve beaten, over the first six months of the season.”

Man for man, most neutral observers would easily pick 9 or 10 Spurs in a combined XI. Their strength has been playing as a team, he should remember that.

And out of the top 6, they've so far beaten Man City only. All the top teams?!

Hopefully this is another 'Piers Morgan' one to file away unti the final whistle....

I like this - it smacks of all the times over the last few years our own players have come out with 'We are overtaking Arsenal' type media soundbites in the build up to the NLD which have rarely preceded a positive result.

The more WHU players come out with this sort of crazy talk the less and less likely it is they will win.

I remember a few years back when Martin Jol was interested in bringing Downing to WHL and he turned us down. Quite glad he did really as I've always felt he's a player that blows hot and cold.

I think Comolli, rather than Jol, had the predominant interest, hence why Downjng ended up at Liverpool. Certainly glad we didn't spend £15-18m on him.
