I think Levy might be trying to tell Harry, you've got a much better chance of winning something important with Spurs than you have winning something with England.

I think Harry might be trying to tell Levy something along the lines of:

"Start spending now Dan or you know where I'm going".

Calm down everybody.

The odds of him signing are extremely low, If he is going to leave then Madrid will definately be in for him as they hired Zidane just to secure the signing of Hazard, I know he wants regular football and Madrid might not offer him that but I believe he will go there.

Actually, if you read what he said. He says he hopes a deal to us can be done in the next few days unless I am mistaken, also everyone who has seen the interview says his body language told an even greater story than his words.

There will be more of you out there with a better handle on these FFP regs who could put me straight on this, but is asset value taken into account with FFP?
What I mean is, should 30 mill be spent on Hazard, as a 21 year old, would that then possibly mean that we are holding an asset of potential higher value?
If the assessors were to analyse trends then might they not take into account the facts that both Modders & Bale have tripled/quadrupled in price? That Lennon is now worth over 20 times what we paid for him? That our player trading has, in the main, showed reasonable profit with the huge returns gained on players like Berbatov, Carrick and Keane?

I'd like to think that DL is all over this and such is the case but would hope that someone out there can confirm this.

I don't think it works anything like that.
I am not an expert on it - so you could be right, going into that depth, and I could be entirely wrong - but, as I understand it, trasnfer fees paid and wage bill, each year, has to match a set proportion of income.
So, for the sake of simplicity:
Income £100 million
Transfer budget/wage bill = 55% of income = £55 million
Wage bill = £35 million
Transfer budget = £55 M -£35 M = £20 million.

So, in other words, in this fictionalised account, this club would have £20 million to spend on transfers. If they decided to spend £22 million on one player they would be spending £2 million over budget and breaking the Fair Play regs. If they spent £20 million, which would be fine, but then offered him wages of £10 million, when their budget allowed them to spend £5 M more on wages, they would be £5 million over their spend allowance, as calculated as % of income for Fair Play regs, and, again would be over their limit.
If, the next year, by some miracle, their income was £200 million, but their wage bill stayed the same, that would give them £110 million - £35 million = £75 million with which to spend on tranfers, improved wages, or a combination.

That is the essence of it, as I understand it.

Here is the interview, talks about Bale, Modric and Kranjcar at 1min.

Check out the monobrow on the bloke behind him!! :eek:mg:

i would be over the moon if we sign hazard..but 25 - 30m seem way too much for the usual DL..i mean he wasnt willing to spend 20m to even solve our greatest problem at striker, wasnt willing to splash 30m on cavani, it would be hard to think that he will spend 25 on a position that we are not specially weak at..

TBH, and with all due respect, I don't think you have quite understood how Dan Levy operates and what he is doing here.
He has been on something of a learning curve since joining us. He was Joe Lewis's business prodigy, and, supposedly both were Spurs fans - but he had no experience of working in a footballing club. He has been making mistakes and learning from them, since he aririved.
With reference to the strikers: he went down the route of buying an entire strike force, and that didn't work. He has went down the route of having a DOF buy strikers, and that was partially successful - but we improved too slowly for them, they wanted out, before a team, that they were bought to be key components off, wanted out, wanted off to bigger clubs. Others were brought in to play an envisaged system, like Darren Bent, and then, when the manager changed, the style changed, and that striker became surplus. Since then, we have all known we needed to upgrade our strikeforce - probably since the sale of BerbaGit/Keane. Our strikers have come in as quick-fixes and stop gaps, or one off goal-getters with no long term planning.

But that isn't really what Levy seems to want. I think what he has learned most, is the value of the DOF approach to buy players for a system, and he is aiming on implementing an entirely different strikeforce to play an entirely different style of football (we all saw Pav didn't suit our play; Defoe is a goal-getter, but doesn't really suit our style of play). He isn't doing this in one expensive fell-swoop - like he didn't under GHoddle, when he replaced our entire strike force in one go - and it went hideously tits-up.

As far as I see it, VDV was his first stroke in this process. It may have been frustrating for us, wanting a striker in now every transfer window, feeling that we could be missing out on CL for lack of a new striker. But what he doesn't want to do, is buy expensive strikers, in a hurry, who might get goals quick, but don't really build on our system in the way that he wants, and/or, may be too old to be seen as a long-term solution. What he wants, so far as I can see, is a totally revamped strike-fore, that is young, dynamic, all parts compliment the whole, and will have a long shelf-life.

Frustrating, I know, but imagine a strikeforce that can switch from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 at need, where all positions are covered, and each member of the strikeforce can compliment each other member - so even if two were injured, we could play the same system with two strikers who can compliment one another. And a strikeforce that can be in place for 4 or 5 years, in a team competing at the top, and even if one player is sold, it should be easier to replace that component. And with players coming through, that have already been bought with a view to filling the gaps - like, for instance, Coulibaly

I think that is why he wasn't happy just going out and buying <INSERT FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH STRIKER> for a massive fee - afterall, we did that with Darren Bent and where did it get us?

Just how I see it, and I could be wrong.

City also have to prove their consistency too, the arrogance of some fans is remarkable.

:hump::hump::hump:

I think it is important to remember that Lille and Hazard contacted us.

We must look like a great place to play your football, no one can disagree with that

Exactly - I honestly feel that a lot of folk are stuck in this time-warp where they jsut can see what is being put-together at the Lane at the moment. With the state-of-the-art training complex, the healthy finances, the exciting young squad, etc, we are flying and looking an attractive proposition - what do folk think Fergie was selling United to kids like Beckam with, when they hadn't one anything worthwhile in decades, and had never had a period of dominance like Liverpool were just coming out of (and no-one knew that wasn't just a glitch).

This is a club on the up, with fantastic players playing attractive football - that is an enticing proposition for young players, especially with a good opportunity of actually playing, rather than sitting on the bench.

So, summary of the interview:

Hazard thinks he can learn most in England because there are big matches every weekend and in Spain, you can only compete for trophies with the top two clubs. It's much more difficult to play for Barca and Real at his age than it would be for a top English club.

He came across Bale, Modric and Kranjcar in Belgium's qualification campaign for the World Cup. (That is the bit where he repeats Kranny's name).

Direct translation:

Interviewer - The reaction from the audience is that this makes good sense - is this just a rumour?

Eden - Yes it's a rumour. It's a club that interests me because, as you just said, they have great players, I think a great manager as well but as for me, I haven't signed anything yet even though I hope we can get something done soon. For the moment, my mind is completely focused on Lille.

Sounds more like a 'I am available come and get me' announcement.
More to Real Madrid and Barcelona than Spurs who will both pay more for him and pay him more, Real Madrid for sure.
He even says that Spanish football would suit him better.
He mentions Spurs certainly and checks one or two of our players but I think that this is as long way from being done and 40/60 at the very best.

Sorry, clearly a good player and the type of signing we should be looking at.
Until the manager situation is clearer and a new pay structure in place I'm not sure annything will happen.
The new stadium is too far down the line to influence signings in the next couple of years.

Jimmy, watch the interview with the translation I provided. You will note how his words combine with his body-language. He's clearly a level-headed guy (as acknowledged by the interviewer and audience) and he doesn't feel that he'll get much opportunity at Barca and Real at his age.

I think he sees Spurs as part of his career progression to bigger and better things but let's sure as hell enjoy the ride!

I had a little excitement spasm after seeing all that is in this thread and I'd be excited if the window was still open but there's so much time for things to change unless we do strike some sort of official agreement but I just don't know as of now.

For me this stinks of Kluivert years ago. But in fairness we have done great business in the close season before the summer window, Berbatov, Bale, & Modric. But this looks like a come get plea, to the better of teams. I could see him joining Chelsea, even in their current mess, it would be what they are missing some one to play on the left. But maybe with AVB going that might stall that deal. Would love to see him play at WHL, but where? For me if we got Hazard id sell VDV who is now 29, and play him through the middle.

I think if there is real truth in his interest in us, and our intent to get him...we'll have something agreed relatively quickly.

I speak French, sort of, but my wife does. Seeing as she's a cursed foreigner from tha land of the Gauls. Got her to watch it. She casually - as if this football stuff wasn't the very fabric of life as we know it - said "Yeah, sounds like he's coming to Tottenham for sure."

That's good enough for me and it should be good enough for all of you, unless you're calling the mother of my children a liar. Well, are you?

Coz I might just have to bust out the "yo momma" material if any of you sumbitches do.

Those day's when players used our name to gather interest from big clubs are surely over.

Not to sound delirious. Even if we don't sign the likes of Hazard we will attract and sign a player of his caliber.

Can't help but think its now EVEN MORE critical that we don't incur losses to Manure, Scum and Chelscum, and get dragged back into a 4th place battle. Maybe if we come through the next 3-4 weeks all rosy, it could be the catalyst that finalises the deal for him

For me the telling point of the whole thing is what JJ has said this morning.

He said at the end of the window, that we had agreed a deal but it all went quiet. Now this morning JJ has said the the interview was a very pleasant surprise to the Spurs heirarchy, perhaps, becuase of this, we may well go back to the negotiating table with Lille in response to Hazards interview, with a view to getting this done early.
