It reminds me of a game we used to play as kids called Scramble. Isn't it also a Scottish tradition that the groom throws coins for kids?

There's a picture on the internet of those kids in Lille when the coins had stopped being tossed. Their swag bag ended up with a couple of pounds in weight of coins. Kids must have had a good day. I think people are trying to find offence in something for the sake of it.
Drop the shovel and step away from the hole! A bunch of pissed adults derisively tossing coins on the ground for kids to pick up for pure entertainment? Drawing parallels with some obscure Scottish wedding tradition that I'm sure you've never witnessed...makes no sense.

In a conversation as long as an encyclopedia, no one seems to have questioned why 7 year olds were wondering around a borderline locked down city on their own anyway...?
Who said they're alone? Even if they were that makes them vulnerable children, not just regular children. Are you suggesting that it's their fault? That's exactly like saying a woman wearing a short skirt deserves to be assaulted

& that ridiculous comment gets 2 'winners' ..

Absolutely astonishing & very troubling the number of people here either directly or tacitly defending the indefensible on the last few pages

Edit; possibly misinterpreted the post if so apologies are due

2nd para stands!!

Have you seen KentuckyYid's posts before? Citing and fabricating strange unrelated straw man examples as moral justifications for sociopathic behaviour is his 'thing' - it gets him all hot and heavy.

Well actually, it was published in BuzzFeed not FT. How's your respect for BuzzFeed for journalistic integrity?

The actual tweet has loads of people calling him out as a liar and he doesn't once try to defend himself. He's been getting shamed with comments like you stood there and watched it without intervening, and you watched it but took a picture after the event.

His claim stinks of bullshit.

You're missing the point. It doesn't matter what I think of Buzzfeed or the fact that it was published on there, it's that it was an FT journo who tweeted this using a verified account. It makes no sense for him to make stuff like this up.

You'll also have to forgive me for putting more stock in a tweet from a verified account of an FT journalist than a dozen or so subsequent tweets from random twitter users.

Eh?! Not sure how you could have read "he's blaming the kids" from what I wrote. This has all clearly touched a nerve, sorry.

An extreme example is missionaries taking "the word of god" to the dark continent. Bringing light & salvation. But they brought slavery, and laws meant to hold them back, and a flag for them to die for. Let them serve us in this life so in the next they might be born again by christ.
Really? Them pesky white missionaries have a lot to answer to...

When they convinced the Egyptians to use slave labour to create the pyramids was ok though...

Don't even bother. He's tried to smear you as a rape apologist. It's not worth debating somebody like that, he's clearly having an unhinged week.

As I wrote in a post, I`ve always felt almost warmly welcome in England. The most polite people in Europe. Almost too polite. "Thank you, please, excuse me, please, please, please" in every sentence, but that`s nice. When I see many english abroad I sometimes wonder what kind of english who enjoys traveling (in Europe). And honsestly, I would be ashamed and embarassed if I was english when I see those and read about how they behave.

To be honest, I dislike and almost literally hate this provocative singing/chanting and general monkey mentality more than I dislike real hooligan fighting in some backstreets. The latter is actually better, cause you`re not provoking and involving everyone if you do it that way.

I`ve seen some statements which maintain that the english have behaved well for 16 years now. No, not true. I`ve seen an english documentary film about the english behaviour in Germany in 2006. Not much of real fighting maybe, but a lot of provocative behavior. Stealing other nations flags, racist chants (you know- the one about the turks), thowing chairs etc etc.

That`s the worst. This monkey tribe behavior. I agree with Lineker: An embarassment.

The russian thugs are extremely voilent and terrible, yes. But, many english supportes are not tough enough to fight, but tough enough when it comes to throwing bottles and chanting shit when they have 100 persons surrounding them. Silly!

Don`t do it if you don`t mean it.

NB! It`s not Europe that have to adapt to and understand english supporters. It is english supporters who got to adapt to, respect and understand the country they are going to!

You're not British so there's no need for you to feel embarrassed.

These people have been tarnishing the country's reputation for decades but I wouldn't confuse lack of politeness with the images of oblivion drinking, mock bravery etc.. Most of these blokes on their own or with one or two mates would be charming towards cafe owners when ordering fnb, or in everyday scenarios, and back home would certainly demonstrate the social values most Brits are very proud of.

When half cut, especially in a crowd, they get carried away. I'm not excusing them, but they've grown up in a football culture of effective policing and stewarding where you can goad without having to back it up. most of the time it's relatively harmless and still represents a minority if an annoyingly large minority, till of course the local police get batons and tear gas out which obviously then brings out the worst in those people. Both sides in the wrong, not just one, surely?

There are thousands of others who unnoticed by the media will have a beer and singsong with rival fans, buying each other rounds swapping hats and scarves but that's of no interest to anyone but those who do it.
