England - How much do you care

England... how much do you care. I have been hurt too many times, caught up in the hyperbole that we have had a truely realistic chance of winning the world cup... sucked into the belief that a "golden generation" would bring the trophy home, only to be profoundly disappointed.

I find myself in the position that I don't care as much as I used to. Dont get me wrong, I would love us to win but maybe I am getting more pragmatic in my old age. I have become desensitized to the
Jingoism that ignites if we have one decent performance. The reality for me is that we are a decent team, that others wouldnt fancy facing but we wont win... probably how most of the football world views us.
I just dont feel the same... maybe its self preservation but when South Africa comes around I hope I rediscover the same unbridled joy that I will feel if Defoe bangs in a late winner against Manchester on Saturday.

I'm mostly interested in how our lads do really. I only really get excited when the big tournaments begin. The World Cup is the greatest tournament on the planet. I couldn't imagine England not being in it. Missing the Euros was bad enough. But mostly i just love watching the best players in the world in one short tournament.

Hi mate, I think there is similar thread in spurs chat.

I care as much as wanting to see the games when we're in the tournament and looking out for results of the games I don't see but I don't buy the shirts, the car flags. I don't decorate my house and I don't sing England songs.

I support England when they play because I was born here and naturally have an affiliation with the National team, but what I lack for England is any sort of passion.

I jumped up and down like a mad man when Lennon scored that goal against Birmingham, shouting my head off in my front room.

When Diggin drove over the line to score a try in the final 2 minutes for Northampton on Sunday to snatch the win after being 17-0 down I rejoiced, punched the air and hugged my dad who was doing the same. I've not done anything like that over England for years.

I care lots! Not as much as I do about Spurs, but still lots. Like every World Cup/Euros, I think we can win it, no doubt I'll be let down again but it still won't stop me believing. Can't wait for the World Cup next year!

Happens all the time... trust me... in the build up to the world cup, when everyone in the country is wearing some sort of football shirt, every pub and shop is covered in flags and world cup promotions, you will care again!

Happens with Spurs a bit as well, but more with England... watched the friendly on Saturday and wanted to die... but the second the first ball is kicked in SA, I'm gonna be a quivering wreck!

Nothing beats going into town after an England victory in a Euro/World Cup... everyone's absolutely buzzing!

Ah man, just thinking about it's getting me moist!

I went mental when Campbell "scored" against Argentina. I was massively frustrated when Lampard, Gerrard and Carrick were plodding about the other day against Slovenia. I do care, but during the season I'd rather not have to worry about it, particularly as part of me wants all the Spurs players playing (and well) whereas another wants them on the subs bench, avoiding injury.

I think the nation as a whole has got quite sick of some of the players, how much they get paid and how they conduct themselves outside of football. I don't remember players getting booed as much as the current players do now. Lescott getting booed for moving to Man Citeh is an example maybe from fans that they are tired of players chasing the money. Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard have also suffered from the England pantomime fans in recent years. It did used to be easy in the past when i was younger, to get behind England as players like Pearce, Ince, Gazza and Shearer as they genuinely loved playing for England

This question should be asked on the eve of a World Cup quarter or semi-final. People tend to care a bit more then.

honestly, i haven't given a shit since 1996...

at the end of the day what does it matter, you go through all this effort and still end up losing to Germany on penalties

I care a lot. It's strange though as it's impossible to care about England when playing meaningless friendlies (many are now truly meanngless). I care during the group games and go mental during major tournaments, though always with my feet on the ground.

It's hard to care about something so much and then not care for the next 6 months.

Ditto word for word.

I remember Italia 90 with such great affection, going into the pub after work to watch the games, work next day with a hangover, then the complete let down of the game against the Germans, couldn't believe we were out. Same for Euro 96, Badiel & Skinner, great memories. The tournament where it kicked off at silly o'clock so you were pissed by the time the game finished and it was only 9.00am or something

I don't enjoy it as much when none of our lads are in the team though.

At world cup/Euro i care quite a bit, besides that i only care about our players if they are playing for them, and often find it hilarious if we concede a goal to someone rubbish,
