Ironically since he's only 20 still, he wouldn't have to be listed in the 25 man PL squad. So even though he's English, but a foreigner by technicality, it wouldn't matter initially anyhow.
I'm definite that we need a LCB to maximise Pochettino's system, but a google search, transfermarket tells me Dier is two footed, so may work out nicely.

RCB - Kaboul, Chiriches, Lascalles?
LCB -Vertonghen, Dier, Fryers

Dawson out.

Dawson definitely needs to go but with Kaboul's injury record I think that still leaves us one experienced defender short.

Fair enough.

My own experience is simply that I grew up in a region of the US with many Hispanics from many different regions, had several close friends from the demographic, and have been on quite a few trips to different countries in Latin America. Folks from various cultures each said they could at least understand a Portuegese speaker well, but that's simply my own impression from what I've been told. Could very well be wrong though!

As I said, I place more emphasis on the fact he grew up with Spanish-speaking players than anything else.

Haha but again, solely a speculative idea thrown out and certainly not worth us arguing over.

Reading through the Sporting forum is interesting, some contrasting views on how good they believe Dier to actually be (the same for 90% of player on every football forum I guess)

The rumours in Portugal are €5 million, and although a few don't believe he will be good enough as a first team regular right this moment they think it is scandalous in regards to his potential and nationality.

There are certainly positive comments about his potential.

He was interviewed on Footballl
Focus last season. Seemed a thoroughly down to earth and well rounded lad.

Interesting to see the make up of the 4 CB squad places come the close of the window. Looking like there are no takers for Dawson, quells surprise.

Not the case at all. He had had offers from Hull, Palace, QPR. He has turned them all down.

A fella called The Ghost on FTL has posted this from a Chelsea mate of his...

My best mates nephew Eric has been playing for Sporting Lisbon first team for a couple of years ... He's flying in this afternoon to have a medical with Spurs ... We are all terribly disappointed !! What a waste .

So this gives us Vertonghen, Kaboul, Chiriches and Dier (assuming Dawson is off).

Will we be keeping Dier as part of the first team squad? If so then would we bring in any more defenders?

No chance he will be leaving playing first team football for Sporting to be in our youth team

I was more wondering whether we'd loan him out.

Sounds like he's coming in as part of the first team squad though...so that might mean we're done on defensive signings.

Thanks. Despite your view on their respective potential are you happy with us signing Dier?

I thought that Ilori would prove a good signing for Liverpool also but doesn't seem to be going well so far.

I think he is a very good signing :) He has the potential to be a really complete center back. It is one of those that you could imagine playing for Barcelona in the future :) he knows how to use his feet to play football :p At the moment, I think he lacks aggressiveness and he needs to improve his positioning a little. But why to trust me? Last week, after Sporting played Utrecht, Co Adriaanse said (more or less): "I liked Eric Dier a lot. Since he is tall, he looks slow and heavy, but he isn't!!! In some plays he was really good. He seems a very complete player."

Two seasons ago, Dier was one of the best Sporting players (for the club it was a disastrous season). He played really well as center back but, if I remember correctly, finished the season playing as defensive midfielder due to the lack of players at the squad. So at the beginning of the previous season, every Sporting fan was expecting him to be an important player in the starting eleven, but, surprisingly, he lost his place to Mauricio, an interesting player that came from the Brazilian second division (Dier was injured at the beginning of the season). This season he has been one of the best players so far. It is quite surprising that he is leaving, nevertheless, in last months there have been rumours that he doesn't want to renew his contracts that ends next year...
