I have fond memories of Dier is seasons past and he is a player I want to see do well because ultimately I think his heart is in the right place. He gave away the free kick that led to the own goal with a needless challenge from behind, he is experienced enough to know better.
I was thinking halfway through yesterdays game what our defence would be like if we had VVD instead of Dier, not only for his defending abilities but also how he would direct the full backs and midfielders.

Dier is one of those players that some fans won't give any credit to for whatever reason. He has been a lot more solid, and far fewer mistakes are happening. I wouldn't even class the own goal as a mistake. It was a fluke occurrence. He was unsighted thanks to Romero.

Give him a stable CB partner and he thrives. He and Romero seem to be it.

Also between he and Reggy, they got the defib and medic over as quickly as they could. He is a decent human being, who many could learn a lot from.

Yeah he’s unfairly getting it in the neck for that OG, it was a complete fluke, but people can’t wait to stick the boot in.

If that ball had connected an inch further on either of his leg, or an inch higher/lower, it wouldn't have been a goal.

It really couldn't have been any unluckier. Perfectly inside the bottom of the post, centimetres away from Lloris' outstretched arm.

He's given people plenty to complain about in the past, and perhaps the free kick he conceded could have been avoided (personally think it could just as easily not been given). But I think blaming him for the goal itself is beyond reaching for a reason to criticise him.

Very reasonable post!?

Can't fault him as a character and a leader, just wish he'd advanced as a player. He's potential John Terry material but he's more like Terry Scott at times.

cant tell whether the John Terry comparison is an insult or a compliment

Will get overlooked but his diagonal to Reguillon to setup Tanguy was great.

Love the sound of that hitting the net.
On another note, well done to those Spurs fans that travelled. Totally outsang 'the best fans in the world' all match (well, 10mins onwards anyway).

I think Dier will continue to improve, and if he rids the brain farts from his game will be a top CB. I'm happy with our CB roster tight now and would rather prioritise an upgrade at RWF

I like Eric Dier. As a poster said earlier, he's a good human being. He does a lot of good stuff and there's the makings of a very good defender there but I worry about his ability to smell danger. As I coach I always told my forwards to expect the ball to come to you in those sort of situations. Be prepared for the defender to miss it. It might only happen 1 time in a hundred but if it does then it's in the back of the net.

I told my defenders to have to have the same attitude. Expect your partner to miss it, then you don't have to adjust. Same as the ball coming across the box. Unless you get a shout from your keeper then deal with it. The keeper has the whole game in front of him and he has to take charge. If he doesn't then sort it and we'll discuss your options later.

In that case I'd like to note Reggie's elegant settling of that pass.
In that case I'd like to note your elegant use of the term 'settling' when referring to that pass. Don't often see it used so fair play.

Fucking useless. Week after week, month after month, year after year

Never ever a CD in a back four

Puts his arm up well again whilst being 2 yards behind Cavani and a yard behind Romero

Poor all game. What a difference to Romero

Dier is a bottom 6 CD in a back 4. No question about it

Genuinely baffled at how he's managed to start for two different managers. I genuinely believe if we were to look at every goal we've conceded this season so far you could pin point him as the key reason for about 80% of them

Don't get me wrong, he's ok, he's serviceable for most of the games, but he panics and he's severely lacking in defensive awareness. He ball watched and doesn't even notice danger at seriously critical moments. Rashford goal today was a perfect example. I honestly don't know why Sanchez isn't even getting a sniff into this line up, maybe Dier is a good dressing room presence, or shows he's commited but he's just flat out not good enough and I'm tired of the supporters turning a blind eye to it cause he shows passion for the club

That second goal they scored today...I'd love to ask him why he makes the decisions he does...why position yourself that high? What do you think you can offer being positioned there? It's like everyone around him never places any blame or responsibility when he's actually been the common denominator defensively this season and last. Doesn't need to be sold but HAS to be dropped
