It’s crazy he’s still a first choice squad player, there is probably at least 30 cbs in the league better than him, and countless more in the championship.

The fact he is seen as a leader and someone that can organise the back 3 is shocking. He really lacks so many skills/traits to be a good CB and how he is still here is beyond a joke.

Him and fucking Davies! Find me another team in the prem that has a player still starting in their team that they bought in 2013 or 2014.

The funny part is there will still be people that think this is an exaggeration but it really isn’t. I’d take bottom of the table Southampton’s Salisu, Bella-Kothcap and Caleta-Car over Dier, says it all really.

makes me feel nauseous that he has played more games for us than the great Ledley king, the fact he survived so long here (when no other serious club would put up with this) is a prime example of the ENIC era.

Lurch doesn't read the game well to make up for the fact he is so ponderous on the pitch. Think the quickest I've seen him move is when he went into the stands a few seasons back.

Both him and Davies were bought in as young players who could develop and push on but been clear for a while both have low ceilings yet here we are today and are first team regulars.

I've said I can live with them as squad filllers but getting to a point where I actually want to see the back of them. Its not their fault, I'm sure they try but its just not good enough at this elite level.

We always seem to be in sitiation where we need a couple of players for the first team. 2 CB's and a GK are vital this summer but on top of that lose Kane and then we are left with a huge hole in the team.

If Sunderland were a bottom 3 Prem League side we’d have sold him and Tanganga in deal worth about £10m. That’s the level.

I don’t get how he stepped up so well last season and has turned shit again??

Says a lot about his mentality as well as ability for me.

I counted 5 challenges today where he came flying in about a second after the opponent had already taken a touch to get away from him. 2 led to fouls.

I feel sorry for those who have paid for tickets watching him over the last few years.

He has literally had a golden period 15-17 and then a brief run end of last season.

The rest of the time he has looked ponderous, off the pace and is only 2 games from a dumb mistake.

I used to go at it with a certain poster in here quite often about Eric's ability (lack of) Is Bring back le gin still here? Would be interested to hear if he still feels he is quality.

Seemed to lose his form around getting recalled for England. I for sure wish that hadn't happened, as he seems to have lost the drive and determination since then.

Some of the comments the past few pages about him are shocking though. Can assume it's kids or "fans" who have never set foot in London let alone WHL. Give you heads a wobble, he's one of ours and one of our best performers last season.

Where were you last season when he was one of the players of the year? Or do you only crawl out of your basement to bash our prayers when they're out of form?

I'd agree with the 'England part' if it wasn't for him looking dreadful for years now.

Last season was a purple patch. He's 29 FFS. He should be at the absolute peak of his career now as a CB.

Truth is he isn't good enough.

It was a purple patch and I am normally restraint with critiquing players but I have made excuses for him in the past.

But that stops now. He is simply not of the standard required.

I am a season ticket holder, third generation fan and have the right to have an opinion that he is not up to the required level, or we can just forever indulge in mediocrity

Been here 8 years and the only thing dier fans can say to back him is 1) first season 2) second half of last season, those 2 highlights in a near decade is simply not good enough
