Perhaps one where we will hang in there for a permanent deal, if it can’t be done, late loan. Better to have someone else paying him than us.

Dier digging his heels in after not being involved in a match day squad is just bizarre tbh
I also can't see him getting many offers as a 30 year old off the back of an average - poor season last year then missing a year out not being registered. Even on a free punt

I don't understand why we wouldn't be keen to loan him?

We'd get his wages covered for a season and then he can leave for free.
Because we have as far as I remember, never loaned out a player in their last year of their contract. Very few clubs do.

A sizeable loan fee also doesn't make sense as the club in question wouldn't be able to have a buy option or anything because the contract will have run out after a year.

Part of the reason why we are in our current mess from a squad management stand point is that we've let players like Aurier and Doherty leave for free and now the agents of the players with one year contract is playing chicken with us.

If we do something similar with Dier this summer, then the following players can have their agents do the same thing next summer if they haven't left permanently by then or signed a new Spurs contract.
- Hojbjerg
- Ndombele
- Sessegnon
- Lo Celso
- Reguilion

Maybe we will try for a sale in January.
Just saying, don't shoot the messenger.

He's on big wages and at best 5th choice, so no sense in not getting him out and getting a little money covered.

But he's at best 3rd choice. Sanchez might well leave. After that, I really don't think it's clear that in a conventional pair of CBs Davies is a preferable option to Dier.

For the record if we don't get a new CB in and Eric Dier is the last man standing I do not accept he will be the catastrophe everyone is saying he will be, whilst he may not be the perfect round peg for the hole we have he is still an experienced defender and will give us good service this season until we bring our new star player in.
Not ideal but manageable.

Of course he prefers a loan to become a free agent next summer.

However, if there actually are offers for a permanent transfer, the club should IMO incentivize him to accept those by letting him know that he will not make the 25-man squad (as opposed to just rolling over and let him choose a loan deal instead).

I just don’t see the logic in not loaning him, he isn’t going to play regardless.

I wouldn’t even be shocked to see Phillips play ahead of him.

If a move isn't on the cards, either perm by him or loan, then we should just pay his last year off and let him find someone else.

It's abundantly clear he isn't in Ange's plans so let's just get rid of him now if no one wants him. What's the point of paying him every week if he's not gonna play. Would rather give his spot to someone else.

Whereas loaning him out may make sense on a stand alone basis, it does set a precedent for any other
unwanted players to only accept loan moves for their final year.

I think this precedent is already set for anyone who thinks they can pocket a much bigger signing on fee/have more options on a free, particularly for players like dier who arent on an upward trajectory.

Have we had ITK or reports about him holding out so he can be a free agent, or is everyone assuming? Because surely he could also just not have been happy with the offers that were on the table for any number of valid reasons - salary, playing time, location, etc.

If he doesn’t leave today I think he gets his contract terminated at the end of the day. Not in his or our interest for him to stick around when he can’t even make Matchday squads. We’ll try to avoid that in the remaining hours as we seek a transfer / loan for him, but failing that I suspect he’s done here.

Wish him well but it’s probably for the best

I guess noone knows as in noone from the club or Dier himself has confirmed, but based on all the noise from several angles, it seems like the situation is that Dier will want to wait for hid big moment next summer when his contract runs out and he can negotiate a free transfer. I would think in a scenario like this, the club will give the impression of not allowing a loan to bridge the time to next summer (as there will be less in it for the club), only accepting permanent transfers. It could be that Dier, knowing that the alternative for him could be that he is not refistered and therefore will have at least 6 months of the sidelines, eventually accept a permanent move elsewhere. It could also be that the club blinks first and accept a loan offer that is better for the club than paying him full salary to sit on the sidelines. Will be interesting to see how this pans out. But I dont see that is any point for the club to accept to pay him off prior to deadline, unless Dier is at least willing to forego all/most of the salary for that final year.

Really is little point in him staying. Imagine a late loan where the other club pick up his wages is the most likely scenario and he can go on a free next summer.

Not in manager's plans, if he has decent offers to leave and wants to sit out to leave as a free agent instead then keep him, pay his wages and use him as a last resort. A disincentive for others to try to force a contract buyout when they have other options. Paying him out costs the same but allows him a sign on fee and an immediate restart to his career. Make Dier decide, don't reward him for wanting it all and giving nothing.
