HE WAS bought as a replacement, but it now seems that Erik Lamela could be following Gareth Bale from Tottenham to Madrid in January.
The Argentine ace has struggled to adapt to the Premier League after making a £30m switch from Roma in the summer.
And now reports in Spain suggest that Andre Villas-Boas is ready to send Lamela to Atletico Madrid on loan in January.
It is thought that tentative negotiations have already begun over a short term deal, that would see Lamela return to White Hart Lane in the summer.
The 21-year-old has started just two Premier League games for Spurs this season and has scored a single goal in the Europa League.
It is not the impact Tottenham had hoped for when they splashed such a substantial chunk of the £85m they received for Bale on the former River Plate star.
Now Villas-Boas is hoping that some time in La Liga will help restore Lamela's confidence and help him continue to develop.
Atletico are in market for a new attacking midfielder, and have been linked with a move for Chelsea's Kevin De Bruyne, as they become increasingly concerned about losing Koke to Liverpool, Manchester United, AC Milan or Barcelona.
Atletico have become an increasingly popular loan destination for English clubs in recent times, with Chelsea keeper Thibault Courtois having spent the past two seasons with the Madrid club.
I would not be happy with freeing up players to strengthen our rivals again (like what happened with Ozil)
