Going slightly off topic, bit still pertinent to the OP I suppose;

if, and this is a big IF, L'Arse have this huge war chest, then why are we seemingly landing decent players and they have done relatively fuck-all since the window opened?
They still have time to unveil some new wonder-boy I know, but it looks like they are the less attractive proposition even with CL next season

I think we're going for excellent but realistic players, whereas they seem to going for broke with players like Suarez, rather than strengthtening overall.

We have a very nice midfield now and I love this signing.

Now the defence needs to do something about preventing goals against from set pieces, especially corners.

He looks good, but I hope he doesn't turn out to be another Zokopops. An upgrade on Hudd, Livermore and Parker's form of last year I'm sure. Things are looking up guys. I just don't know what L'Arse are doing, it's like they've forgotten how to buy players. That shennanigans about the £40,000,001 bid for Suarez was one of the most inept things I've ever seen. I'm still expecting them to pull something out of the bag - they have to - but they're leaving it very last minute. Given last year they tied up that German chap before the season ended I'm surprised. C'mon Wenger, put up a fight please!

Spurs Seal Deal For Capoue: Why The Midfield Beast Can Dominate In England. Transfer Scoring Reports.

By Andrew Gibney
When the 2012/13 season ended, one of the worst kept secrets in France was that Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue had played his last game for La Téfécé. Easily one of the best players in the league, he stood head and shoulders, not just above his teammates, but above most midfielders in the same position. There had been enough interest in the previous 18 months that it seemed certain the player would make a move this summer.

Then, strangely, the trail went cold and the interest around Capoue seemed to die down, it seemed even possible that he would continue his career in the south of France. That was until Cardiff City and Atletico Madrid started to make moves at the end of July. The Welsh club even agreed a fee with Toulouse, but the player wasn’t interested in a move to the Premier League new boys. Quite rightly, his aspirations were set higher than that.

It seems that Capoue’s patience has paid off as Sky Sports have today reported that he has passed a medical at Spurs. London had always seemed the likely destination for Capoue, but it was rivals Arsenal that had shown the most interest in the past. It is Spurs, however, who have signed one of the classiest midfielders in France and a player that has been flying under the radar to most for far too long.

As the best player in the Toulouse squad it’s not a surprise that Capoue finished with an excellent Squawka performance score of 1567. That ranks him third out of all Ligue 1 midfielders ,behind Blaise Matuidi (1691) and Maxime Gonalons (1687), but well ahead of the current Spurs anchor Scott Parker (572). He played 34 games last season and was only subbed off once. His position as Toulouse’s most important and consistent performer was critical in their season, without him they would have finished much further down the table.

Under Alain Casanova, Toulouse mostly favoured playing 4-1-4-1 and often Capoue would play as the midfield anchor, but it didn’t stop him scoring seven goals from inside the box. This comes from his intelligent movement, late forays into the box and the threat he causes from set-pieces – standing 6ft 2inches tall. Two of his best performances last season show the threat he brings from playing as a deep-lying playmaker.

He was instrumental as Toulouse surprised everyone by beating Lyon 3-0 last November. Playing most of the match in his defensive capacity, he stopped everything that Lyon brought his way, winning all three of his tackles attempted and clearing the ball three times and recording three interceptions. Then he would join the attack late on, bursting forward to put the finishing touch on Toulouse’s fast break to seal the 3-0 win.

His defensive prowess sometimes gets overshadowed by his excellent passing. He won 76% of his tackles, and 74% of his aerial duels and he averaged 8 defensive actions per game, which is in line with PSG’s top defender Thiago Silva and well ahead of Parker who scored an average of four per game.

It was again in March of this year when Capoue picked up another of his eight Man of the Match awards for this season, as Toulouse came from behind to beat Ajaccio 3-2 away in Corsica. After going a goal down it was a smart run from Capoue that got him free from his marker and he placed the ball past Guillermo Ochoa from just inside the box. He then turned provider as a beautiful pass from deep on the right found Franck Tabanou free inside the box and he gave Toulouse the lead. After Ajaccio equalised it was left to Capoue to step up and seal the win with a nervy penalty. The 25-year-old calmly stroked it past the Mexican keeper and Toulouse left the island with a vital three points. You can see from Capoue’s heat map from that game that he kept to his position as a deep lying midfielder but still managed to make a telling attacking contribution.

This type of performance was typical to his season. His right foot acts as a magic wand at times and completing 80% of his passes is superb for someone who often tries to play the telling pass. You will find more often than not he is the man before the assist, he finds the pass that leads to the goal and with 21 key passes and 3 assists probably doesn’t do him credit. Everything goes through Capoue, completing over 1500 general passes.

In the Spurs midfield he is likely to have a little more license to go forward and improve on the 29 shots he managed last season, 48% of them found the target, so you could see him becoming even more of an attacking threat. It has also been reported that Capoue could provide some defensive cover, and it’s true, he is a very competent defender, and would do well there, but with all the weapons in his arsenal it would be a complete waste to restrict him to solely defensive duties.
Capoue is capable of controlling games, restricting his opponents and then, with his excellent passing and excellent movement, when the timing is right, he can punish you going forward. Easily one of the most underrated players in France. This could be one of the best signings Spurs make in the next few years.
