Kane will still start the next competitive match on the bench.

I think he might start now that Rooney has the record. The next competitive game isn't really competitive as far as we are concenred anyway so it will give Roy a chance to try something else. Unless he goes for Vardy again ,

He wont do it, but I think he should try dropping Rooney and bring him in off the bench if needed. If Kane is still in better form come October, I'd try it out.
Rooney shouldn't and won't be dropped.

Rooney's going to need surgery tomorrow to remove the ITV commentators from his arse

It's turned into a full on Rooney wankathon. One minute Clive jokes about Kane only being 46 behind, next minute he says if someone is to break the record, we haven't heard of him yet!

Fair play to Rooney for breaking the record, but until he produces the goals in the big tournaments the his goal record will continue to deceive.

Why not? Surely it would be more beneficial for England to give some of the less experienced players some game time?
Because Rooney is the captain and our best player. Winning all 10 games would be a very good achievement and in order to do that we need our best players.

and how the search is on for his (Rooney's) successor. Er, that 22 yr old with 3 goals in 4 appearances despite only starting once. Yeah, him, he'll do it when Rooney gets too slow and unfit to play next season.

Not a huge Rooney fan but I'm glad to see someone finally overtake Charlton's record. Been waiting for this since Lineker. Thought Shearer would do it, then Owen, and when Rooney burst onto the scene I hoped he would.

Mainly because I can't stand hearing about records achieved in the era of good players versus pub teams.

I'm not sure there's that much difference. Charlton scored in 10-0, 8-1 (x2), 8-0 and 9-0 victories, and was involved in quite a few other thrashings as well. Of course, Charlton will always be regarded as more of a legend due to his goals in 1966- and rightly so.

Charlton also scored 5 goals in EURO/World Cup Tournaments, whereas Rooney has scored 6- although Charlton's goals were far more important.

No I'm not saying Rooney is better btw :p

Kane has 3 goals in 4 games for England. Head on a swivel, Rooney. Harry's comin for that ass! *and by ass I mean 50 goal record, btw*

Anyway, congrats Wayne. Quite an achievement.

*insert Donovan and Dempsey int'l goal joke here*:cautious:

Not really sure what you're saying there. The San Marino team would probably give most international teams from the 60s a run for their money. Rooney deserves the accolades.

Also annoyed me when the commentator said that if any England player is to break the record, it won't be someone we've heard of...when Kane just scored his third in four appearances and only one start.

I posted this in the United thread. Charlton got Hattricks in 3 of those high scoring games so it skews the figures hugely.

I think it would be harsh to belittle Rooneys achievments considering the caliber of strikers who have tried and failed since.

Surely the better achievement would be to progress in the actual tournament? To do that we probably need more than one striker who is comfortable and confident playing for the National team.

Charlton was a midfielder though which needs to be taken into account (I'm sure you posted that somewhere as well). It's a shame we haven't got anyone like him now.

Credit to Rooney - he has been a top class player for years and probably undervalued by England fans over the past few years. He will be an England legend - he already probably is.

Not for me. Gary Lineker is a legend as he scored for England when it really mattered e.g. World Cups.
