What do our Irish fans think of their chances in the playoffs considering the teams they may have to play?

Turkey
Bosnia/Israel/Cyprus
Ukraine/Slovakia
Slovenia
Hungary
Sweden/Russia
Croatia/Norway
Denmark

Some average teams in there, but also a few I'd want to avoid.

I've got to say that increasing the number of sides that qualifies has brought new life to the qualification phase. Who would have thought Albania would qualify before these changes?

Hopefully the actual tournament will benefit from the extra sides as well. I'd love to see them get rid of seeding when selecting the groups, but that's obviously not going to happen.

All depends on the seeding. If Ireland get seeded they will avoid the probably hardest opponents (Sweden/Russia, Croatia if they fail, probably Denmark) and they'll have a great chance.

I thought this was a terrible idea that will dilute the tournament but instead it may do the opposite. For me the past world cup was only interesting because smaller teams were giving it go as opposed to going through the motions for the big teams

I don't agree with seeding for play offs, should all come out one hat at this stage!

More to the point, HOW do you seed them, when they all finished 3rd in their groups?!?!
Can't do it on points as it could be argued some groups stronger than others.

According to Wiki it's done on the UEFA national team coefficient ranking at the end of the group stage.

So despite being utter shite in qualifying, if they finish 3rd, presumably Holland would be top seed because of the WC performance.

Madness.....

Fifa don't want to risk that the bigger boys don't make the tournament though. Not good for the sponsors.

Crock of shit though!

IIRC they introduced seeding before a World Cup where both Holland and Spain were in the play-offs just so they couldn't possibly face each other.

I might be wrong about the nations though, point is it was two big nations and FIFA/UEFA didn't want them facing each other in the playoffs so they made a quick decision to introduce seeding and it's stuck ever since.

If Italy don't lose today they will have been 50 consecutive games unbeaten in qualifiers

Holland are absolutely terrible, how has it come to this that they have failed so bad in this group??
