Group starting to shape up as expected now, I think we will win our next 3 as will Rennes. It will then all come down to the final game against Rennes to decide who tops the group and we will have home advantage. Hopefully our goal difference will be better and therefore we can top the group with a draw, that way they have to attack us.

Sky bet have Roma as favourites, Spurs second and Rennes third.

We can win this comp, just got to take it seriously and hope for a little bit of luck - either beating Jose’s Roma or them being knocked out unexpectedly.
Just our luck, third favorites for the competition and they are drawn in our group as the second seed, I assume
But yes we have a realistic chance of winning the trophy but there will be EL drop outs to come, I think

We really should not be fearing Roma. I can’t see anyone coming 3rd in a Europa group will be much to fear.If we don’t win this competition it’s a dreadful failure imo.

There will very likely be a couple of Europa dropouts who'd be favoured over us. Group B has PSV, Monaco and Real Sociedad so one of them will drop down unless Strum Graz can unexpectedly hit third. And in Group C Legia Warsaw have won their first two games - if they go through, that means Spartak Moscow, Napoli or Leicester City will drop down. On current standings (obviously very early days) that'd be Real Sociedad and Napoli in the Conference League and favored for it above us in addition to Roma. Semi-finals in the third-tier of Europe is obviously a staggering failure having been 90 minutes from the European Cup just three seasons ago, but it's probably about par right now.

I said all along that was a good result and a great game of football. Classic cup tie, like the Wolves one. And a result that left us as favorites to win the group.

I know it all seems irrelevant and depressing at the moment but how does the group now work out? I think we are matching Vitesse on head to head and goals scored and so it goes down to group goal difference where we are 2 better than Vitesse.

So a win over Rennes and maintaining goal difference gets us through to the play offs?

Also if I am right, if we had managed to keep it to 1-1 last night then a win over Rennes would have got us top spot in the Group which makes the game management of the last 5 minutes difficult to understand.

Exactly right re a draw last night, would have left us in pole position. As things turned out, the downside of a defeat was way more than the upside of a win, possibly infinitely more.
True the players couldn't be sure of the final result in Rennes, but presuming they knew that Vitesse had equalized the situation had shifted to a mustn't lose, and was worth bearing in mind.

So what kind of mathematical gymnastics are needed for us to qualify?
Rennes have won the group. If we match or better Vitesse's result v Mura we finish second and play-off against a third place side from the EL for a place in the round Rennes have already qualified for.

My understanding is that if we match Vitesse result in terms of both points and goal difference we are through.
We must match them at least in points, but we can afford to win 1 0 for example and still go through if they win 2 0
Basically we have a goal to play with.
I think realistically Vitesse will win, so we have to win also, realistically
My horrible feeling is that Vitesse will win by three, we will win by one and we go out
DISCLAIMER this is just my understanding and opinions. The management accepts no responsibility for any nonsense posted here ?

If we are going to do anything this season we need to bin this competition. If we continue to play a second string team, the first decent team we play will batter us.
If we win tomorrow and city beat West Ham we are one point off 4th, having been crap for almost every game. 6 games after that to half way point of the season and we only have L8verpool to play out of the top 8.
By then I would hope Conte has made some impression on the squad and will have a couple of signings lined up for January .All to play for and sod the conference.

The funny thing is - that’s exactly what Nuno did. Left the A-listers back at Hotspur way for mid week trips. Problem was: the B-listers lost or drew the European tie and then the A-listers lost the PL game on the weekend

Rennes are going for CL this is a complete dead rubber for them. I don’t claim to be an expert on their squad but going from transfermrkt there looks a big drop off to the 2nd Xi. Doku their best player will still likely be out. Hopefully they play a complete 2nd Xi I’m sure we would in same situation.

That is my hope too, but for various reasons outlined before I'm not sure they will
Of course if they do, and we get through. We then have the problem of two extra games in a crowded schedule.
Almost certainly causing more tiredness and issues than the simpler route of fielding quality teams at Mura and Vitesse and topping the group
Not only that, even fielding quality teams in the play off may not be enough. As we might well meet a team considerably better than Mura and Vitesse
Been a massive screw up, whatever happens v Rennes

Well, hopefully by the time those games come around we'll be ticking along nicely instead of stuttering as we currently are. Let's just get it done right v Rennes, that's all that matters.
