Random question pertaining to Europa. I've tried reading up on it but it's late and making my head spin.

Now that the Europa champion goes to Champions League the following year, if an EPL team wins Europa and falls in the top 4 in the league, does that mean the top 5 get into UCL? Or, if an EPL team wins Europa and falls outside the top 4, does that mean only the top 3 go to UCL (similar to what Chelsea did to us)?

...is now up. Playoffs.

http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2015/clubs/club=1652/

Things of note:

No Vorm. Chiriches and Sandro included despite rumours of them being off. Dier has taken Capoue's #15, with the latter changing to shirt number 29. Chadli has changed from 21 to 22, but I think he'd used that number before hand. Carroll and Mason in List A is a surprise. Might be some changes to the numbers that the Premier League website published.

Perfectly rational squad to pick.

He's named virtually all the senior outfield playes who are over 21 - the only surprise might be that Fryers is not included, but versus last season with Davies extra at LB and Dier at CB plus we haven't lost anyone in those positions, he's not actally required. Poch might even want to give Milos Veljkovic some minutes after an impressive pre-season at CB whereas Fryers did not impress. No room for Fredericks or Ceballos with that big squad either.

Naming all the major over 21's also keeps all our options open so if we want to sell them only BAE is seen as an outcast, so we keep maximum £'s.

There are also a number of u21's who do not need to be named as List B players until 24 hours before the match.

Vorm may not have been included simply to save Brad's feelings - he had a good US tour for us, and its up to Vorm to show he's better in training, so that's fair ?

Delighted to see Ryan Mason in the squad after a very impressive pre-season - odds on him and Capoue becoming a favourite of Poch's due to the combination they both have of passing and steel (and Mason's excellent alround vision/amticipatio) ? Probably send some SC'ers into palpatations but imo its a real possibility !

Oh and we can pick a totally different squad for the next round, so this is only for 2 matches

Sorry if its been asked/answered, but if a player plays in these games, can he play for another team this season in the EL? Or are the play-offs freebees?

I've not sen anything specifically on this - but UEFA changed the rules after Liverpool won the CL but were outside the top 4 and therefore England had 5 clubs in CL the following season, to say that England could have only 4 clubs in CL so that if a CL winner fell outside the top 4 placing that England could only nominate the top 4 from the league plus the CL winner the following season.

I can't think they will change the rules for the EL winner competing in CL.

From memory the rules are complicated, but it would not surprise me if we plan to sell Player A, that Player A does not actually appear in either match - and with a 25 man squad plus u21's nobody will be able to know whether Player A will be up for sale or not.

and whoever the hell else we find scraping around at the bottom of the barrel for the first, 20 odd games of the bloody thing until we come against a team that's not based out of a shed in a former soviet union hellhole.

I like the EL, but Christ, it's such a drain for the first 6 bloody months of the thing.

source: UEFA EL regulations for the season, article 2.06 (titleholder)

If Europa League winner is already qualified for the Champions League, it is not created a new CL spot. 5th in PL will never give Champions League.

However, if the EL winner is not already qualified for CL, then that team is given a new CL spot.
This spot will NOT come at the expense of the contingent of its association - so England will have 5 teams in the Champions League if the Europa League winner is not already qualified for the Champions League.

No team placed four in the Premier League will lose its Champions League spot due to another english team winning the Europa League

this doesnt make sense, the rules should be the same as winning the cl, but i suppose its just a rule to protect the 'top 4'

All qualification rounds, included the play offs, are what you call freebees.
Article 18.07 in the regulations. If I'm not mistaken, this didn't use to be the case in the past.

Furthermore, we are allowed to make 1 change to the 25 man squad for the play offs up untill the day before kick off of the first leg. So we can still withdraw one player and add a new signing (or Vorm if we get injury to GK).

Mason & Carroll both too old for "List B" so does make sense to have them in the 25, as it gives Pochettino options on using younger players to give them experience.

Is it next year that they get to change the format of the Europa and CL (tv contracts up for renewal)?

What if both the CL and the EL are won by PL teams finishing outside top 4? Does that means the PL would be entering 6 teams on next seasons CL?!
