Feels like it's only matter of time. 10 or 30 years from now but franchising is simply much safer and financially stable than anything else. Risk of relegation or not getting top4 makes it hard to not take big risks, one bad season can set you back for a decade.

Yeah because the PL can really afford to lose Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham.

The epic domination of Everton, Leicester and Wolves over clubs who routinely bounce between the Championship and back is really going to keep the global audience engaged.
The leagues are bluffing. There all fucked without their top clubs. The big clubs should call them on it.

Have these clubs asked their players whether they're ready to retire from international football?
The Times says this will go to the courts, surely can't be legal to ban players from playing internationals if their club plays in the super league.

The joint statement from UEFA and the various associations is pathetic. They're making out their biggest concern is the state of the game when really they’re shitting themselves over the amount of money they’d be set to lose.

Without a doubt. If those five clubs are excluded, they’d likely be replaced with the likes of Swansea, Brentford, Barnsley, Bournemouth and Reading. Try selling that to your paying audience.

Grim stuff. Pure money grab and not in the spirit of the game or fair competition. Football is about dreaming winning leagues and reaching champions league finals. Not a closed wall garden.

The reason this is going to happen at some point was made crystal clear earlier this season. Saudi Arabia has a clear interest in buying a smaller club and bankrolling them into a powerhouse to knock off a bigger club. So this is 100% going to happen in the near future whether we like it or not. Big clubs need to protect their stature in the game.

Exactly.

As if anyone believes the PL will turn round and be like “well fuck you then, West Ham shall be champions”

Consider the Super League as a replacement for the CL. In theory, domestic leagues would run as normal and European slots would now be SL instead of a UEFA competition. So you wouldn't see much difference in the way things run, so presumably everything else stays much the same.

It’s far more likely to be a closed league though, so where you finish in the PL would have no bearing on whether or not you qualify. Ultimately means that the rest of the PL aren’t playing for anything. That can’t be good under any circumstances.
I’m against it, but if it happens, would want us to be part of it rather than missing out

It’ll be a closed league until they realize theres more money to be made opening it up and making the competition tiered/bigger. It’ll go the route of CL/EL eventually.

Levy has played an absolute blinder here

15 years ago we wouldn't even be considered for such a project, and just look at us now right in amongst it

I’m fairly certain English clubs can’t join unless 14 out of the 20 PL clubs agree with it. Why would they do that?

Or this!

They're not even proposing to leave the Premier League. I don't see why they'd need league approval any more than they need it to participate in the UEFA Conference League, the International Champions Cup or similar.

100% the increase in global audience over the past decade or so has spurred this on too. I only started watching football in 2015, and I’d be lying if Tottenham being near the top of the table or winning the first football match I ever saw didn’t influence my decision to support them. I had no clue of the histories of any of the clubs, but there was no way I was looking at the table and saying “I should support this wonderful club called Sunderland”. I’m certain this is the case for a ton(nearly all) of the global fans where top level football doesn’t exist in heir homelands and cultures. It’s different than living in England, Spain, Italy, etc. where you’re raised in a football culture and brought up to support your local club or a different club you have ties to. At least that’s how it seems to me as someone who isn’t a part of these communities/cultures. The increase in international fans who have no real connection to the sport will lead to the increase in “big club” support, and these clubs probably also want to make sure they are attractive to these newer fans.

I am envious of all the posters on here saying they are done with football if this happens.
I unfortunately have no choice, being a spurs fan is a life sentence for me, can't switch off a way of life.,... each to their own I suppose.
Must remember that when I needlessly argue with some on here, you never know what kind of fan they are and what spurs really means to them.

Format apparently two groups of 10, 18 group games, followed by 2-legged

They dI’d approve it. Clubs wouldn’t be able to play in the CL without it.

Fortunately I have a choice, being a spurs fan is not my whole life, I can switch off, I'm not a crazy person,... each to their own I suppose.

The whole proposal is to break away from the Champions League. If UEFA try to ban them from participating next season, it'll just be a great excuse to bring the whole thing forward next year. Pretty sure that a tournament with Spurs, City, Arsenal, United, Chelsea and Liverpool will get a better TV deal than one with Everton, West Ham, Leicester City and Leeds United.
