So apparantly (according to Talksport) someone has leaked that the sky 4 + Newcastle :)rofl:) want to break away from the EPL and be part of a new European Superleague. UEFA have said they will listen to the proposal. The clubs want it in place by 2012.

This would be a terrible, but I fear inevitable thing for English football. No more NLDs, the 'massive' games would be Villa, Everton, and West Ham would have to (well, not have to, but logical choice) become our official rivals :-|.

Also does this, if it goes ahead, give the green light for Rangers and Celtic to enter the EPL, and hence toll the bell for Scottish football?

The thing is, if the likes of Utd and Chelsea are involved, I have no doubt that they will get their way. Now on the one hand, it could make the EPL a much, much more competitive league, with us having a shout of winning it, but as Wrighty pointed out on Talksport, do we really want to win a league for our gooner mates to tell us its only because they 'let' us win it by pulling out of the league.

I fear for english football.

I thought Platini said that the idea was to replace the Champions League and UEFA Cup with a three-division 'Super League' with promotion and relegation and all that stuff? That wouldn't just include those five teams from England, and all of them would supposedly still have to compete in the PL, even though I don't think that competing in two different leagues like that is at all possible.

No doubt the "big four" (well the "big five" if you count the barcodes) will get in and pull up the drawbridge behind so as to monopolise the situation for perpetuity.

If this happens and even if it includes the Spurs I will never watch another football match ever again.

 at the thought of Newcastle in it!

I reckon this is inevitable, it would be so much in the financial interest of the clubs involved to get into this and then ring fence it like the US sports. If Euro leagues are going to happen it would have to be a big multi-divisional set up with promotion and relegation imo, but it would still be potentially devastating for a lot of clubs.

How would they select the members of this league? would it be based on European CL Coefficient then Newcastle may qualify and if arsenal or Liverpool don't make the CL losing out to Villa or Everton or even us for the next three seasons would they still qualify.

It's all a pile of shit and it will fuck up football as far as I'm concerned.

This idea is a whole lot barmier than the the idea of having 39 league games, with one played overseas.

It would kill football as we know it. They'd have to be a promotion/relegation issue, and what if say one of the big four or Newcastle  got relegated? Would the FA and other FA teams let them back? I'm sure the FA would be against such a league so wouldn't want any deserters back.

I'm with you Kentucky.
What if there was a promotion/relegation to and from the national leagues? would the lowest English team have to be relgated to make space for the new English champions even if they finished high up the european league? or would there, God help us, be play offs? and if so would that also be the case for each country?
Probably won't be a problem because the clubs in it would want to make it a closed club anyway, just to guarantee themselves all that lovely money!! .

It snever going to happen.

The best thing for them to do is to improve the Champions League, which has turned a bit stale now.

The present Champions League is set up with a lot of cannon fodder making up the numbers for the biggies, playing nonsense group qualifiers when the so called "elite" know they are going through anyway having won two group games etc.

2012? Well that hardly worked out for them did it. And if a team such as Newcastle, in the state they were in back in '09, or even now, made it into a European Super League, then the whole thing would be a complete farce right from the start. Presumably they were thinking they could buy their way in, into a new private league, but what a sad joke that would be and I'm not sure how it would be able to be taken seriously one little bit. If it was to proceed, it should be UEFA's league and only be for the best clubs. Logically it would work the same as the Champions League, the coefficient system, top 4 for EPL for example, at the end of the final EPL season before the first super league season, would enter it the following season. Anyway, this whole thing has raised its head again with Bayern Munich chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, coming out and trying to sell it to world football. This article says it would END English football and would be the end of Saturday 3pm football. Well I'm not sure how it would do that, other teams wouldn't be affected, but even the English teams in the super league, what would be stopping them from playing at home on Saturday at 3pm just because they're playing Bayern Munich or someone? I'm not sure I'd be for it, but I'm not sure it would destroy everything either.

what's funny is if Man City, Man Utd, Chelscum and the Goon squad left the Prem to join such a group, with the money in the prem deal now and the fact that it is more valuable and watchable than the CL, it wouldn't surprise me if the Prem succeeded and the new league failed. Which is why this won't happen. Let's be honest your average english fan and global fan would rather watch the BPL than the CL. Man Utd v Monaco just ain't that interesting

however, its the only way people would be able to watch United, so no matter who they're against or how boring it is, people will still be willing to pay to watch it.
