This is football at it's worst. Once again I find myself revisiting the awayday emotions of Jol's era. A game we should have wrapped up and closed down was thrown away because our manager couldn't react to what was happening in front of him.

Two-nil up away from home with 12 minutes to go. Huddlestone has been awful all game, and Everton are coming at us. Why do we need two strikers on the pitch, or at the very least why has Huddlestone been left lumbering around as Everton walk past him again and again.

Huddlestone in a 442 ? No. Huddlestone in a 442 away from home ? No & No.
Huddlestone completed only 33 passes today (72%). He gave the ball away 13 times. Palacios completed 34 (92%) and it's not as if Huddlestone was trying to make killer passes. Palacios made better ones.

This doesn't detract from some of the good things that come out of this game. Under intense Goodison atmosphere and a team that never lie down and always play with spirit we played by far the better football.

We passed the ball well at times and created some really good chances that we were a little unlucky not to score with. Kranjcar and Lennon were playing really well, Crouch was working his fucking nuts off and Defoe was looking lively. Palacios was also playing really well, covering loads of ground.

Dawson was worrying me, same old same old really. You know he'll give his all, but you can never relax when he's on the premises. He just reads the game a little slower than our other CB's.

Ekotto was showing why some of us still worry about him intensely. Redknapp did make a very good decision to take him off at half time. Bale isn't exactly a solid defender either but at least he couldn't be any worse that Ekotto today, he wasn't on a yellow (yet) and he attacks much better than Ekotto.

BUt having got ourselves a deserved two goal lead and the the team coming under increasing pressure, Redknapp failed to act. This is what management is. This is what separates average from good.

You don't need two strikers on the pitch with 12 minutes to go when you are 2-0 up. Redknapp waited until it 2-2 before reacting and then took off Kranjcar FFS ? It was then the wrong sub and the wrong time.

Defoe's penalty was shit.

The end.

Ratings:

Gomes 7 - decent game. No chance with goals.

Corluka 7 - Thought he played well today. Best game in ages.

Dawson 6.5 - Bit dawsonish today. Gave some silly things away that could have cost and gets caught out up the pitch. Gave it his all as usual though. Usual Dawson stuff really

Bassong 7 - Good game.

Ekotto 4 - poor.

Bale 6.5 - Good going forward. Not exactly tenacious as a FB but did OK.

Lennon 7.5 - On the positive side he put in three or four beautiful crosses but on the negative he completed 11 passes the whole game and needed to get goal side of his man when they had the ball and help Corluka defend much more.

Huddlestone 5 - Was dire today. Wasted the ball more than a quarter of every possession he had. For a guy who's there to pass the ball that is not good enough. He wastes it because he cannot play under pressure. His head doesn't work quick enough.

Palacios 8 - I though he was great today. Covered a shit load of ground and completed more passes than Hudd.

Kranjcar 8 - 24 passes to Lennons 11. Yes, yes he's different type of player but created 7 attempts to Lennons 1 and 1 assist each.

Crouch 8 - I'm loving the big fella. This bloke works his utter nuts down to the bare bollock. 29 passes, many challenges and never ducks away from header. Intelligently uses his head as well and frequently finds a team mate.
I could easily drop him and play Kranjcar instead as a No.10 when Modric is back but it would be a fucker of a decision.

Defoe 6 - I'm sorry but you have to minus a point for that shocking penalty. Not the first time I've seen him miss a vital match winning spot kick either.
(west ham) No excuse for a bloke who earns his living and spends every day practising scoring to kick his kick straight at the fucking keeper. Apart from that he was lively and is really playing well off Crouch.

Fucking furious we didn't win this one. 2 points tossed away.

I thought most peoples beef with Jol was that he did take a striker off which invited pressure on to us and resulted in the opposition scoring?

no. if he did anything he would take a midfielder off and put a CB on. Or take a LB off put a midfielder at LB and put a striker off. Just stupid stuff like that. Fulham away a couple of years back was classic Jol. Lawrie Sanchez using his "it was like when the baddy doesn't kill off James" line.

I think Redknapp got the BAE decision right but it was so obvious JJ needed to come on, and despite coming in for some flak on the match thread I would have been far happier if Keane had taken that penalty - it would have been a decision that took major bollocks bringing Keane (or Pavs) for the penalty but Defoe just doesn't inspire confidence in me from the spot.

You do wonder whether BAE would have defended the two goals better than Bale did. We played good football for most of the game and could/should have had more than two goals. Both Defoe and Crouch had good chances that they didn't make count. However, we shouldn't have needed more than two goals to win the game. Yet again this season it's our defending that's cost us. The slip up against Villa, giving Gibson time and space in the cup and letting the lead go today. I suspect we'd do better with Woodgate and King in the team but it looks unlikely that we can rely on either of them. At least Palacios look better today. Anyway, I think the recent defeats have highlighted that we're fine going forward but could do with a really solid, and dependable, left back and centre back and possible a defensively minded midfielder too.

As for the ratings,

lennon, palacios and corluka stand out as people who had good games.

Ekotto, Bale and Bassong stand out as people who had bad games.

Your ratings of Dawson are as always laughable, he scored(AGAIN) and everything Everton pumped forward, he(Dawson) won almost(if not every) Header. And 8 for a guy? who courageously won us a penalty, after gifting them a second goal. Unbelievable, but there ya go.

Oh and crouch an 8? is that for his 20 odd passes? I usually like to count a strikers goals at the end of a game.

How did Palacios gift them the 2nd goal? Palacios was brilliant today.

With a fucking awful clearance straight across our 18 yard box, to an Everton player(it should have been an easy clearance. Had that been a striker laying off to an oncoming winger for a cross then i wouldn't have any problems.

Watch the second goal again and just see how poor it was from palacios.

It wasn't a good clearance I agree but it is the collective responsibility of the team not to make a second mistake, to get focussed and defend the cross properly. We let that clearance bother us and we paid the price for it.

We were under a bit of pressure at that point, you certainly don't need to put yourself under any more unneccesary? pressure. Wilson had plenty of time to hoof that into touch and give us some breathing space, he didnt. You could argue they might have scored from the throw in, but thats another story.

Gomes 7 - Played well.

Corluka 6.5 - He's a great footballer but a slow one, sometimes let's people get the better of him far too easily because of a lack of pace.

Dawson 7 - Good goal and played well.

Bassong 7 - Good

Ekotto 4 - Really struggled and rightfully taken off

Bale 5 - At fault for first goal. Good freekick attempt. Good runs forward but crossing left a lot to be desired today.

Lennon 7 - Played well.

Huddlestone 5 - Not at his best at all today. Didn't do much wrong but was far too anonymous.

Palacios 6 - Was really good, even his passing - until that horrendous clearance which led to the equaliser.

Kranjcar 7 - Played well.

Crouch 6 - Worked hard and played reasonably well but that was an awful miss.

Defoe 5 - Scored a goal but awful shooting today. I've always said he needs to practice and learn how to place a ball and just not hit and hope it goes in. So many good chances wasted today, not to mention the penalty...

No ones saying it wasn't a poor clearance, but it shouldn't have been an issue if we had defended the following cross properly. Palacios was fantastic today and I think made up for Hudd who was in my opinion having an off day.

His ball busting run to win the penalty was inspirational, unfortunately Defoe hit the worst penalty possible.

You're looking at it the wrong way around. Yes i agree we should have defender better but if Wilson does the easiest of things, we don't need to worry about the latter. Its the same as bale giving away the ball from our free kick against Man United the other night, cut out the stupid mistakes and the afterwards won't matter.

i disagree with your dawson rating, thought he played well today. simple fact is he's just not that good, however.

bale was terrible, giving him 6.5 is like giving palacios an 8.... oh. bale made a couple of good runs, struck a good free kick but once again reitarated that he is unbelievably poor at defending. why he/harry still plays (him) at LB is beyond me, he's either a winger or nothing in my view.

defoe was ok, but pretty poor in front of goal for his high standards.

I'm not sure what you constitute creating a chance considering that you've said Lennon only created 1... what about the two fabulous crosses he put in in the first half? Or are balls into the box not chances? And how about the through ball to Defoe which JD hit past the far post?

Are you basing your stats on a source of some sort? If so, get a new source. If you genuinely only saw 1 chance created by Lennon the whole game I can only assume you were channel hopping during play.

As for your ratings of Dawson and Bassong, I'm astounded. Dawson got himself booked stupidly, but that aside he won every tackle (including one superb one from behind in the area), every ball in the air, and he scored a great goal. He was fantastic. Bassong on the other hand lost his man on both the goals we conceded and looked generally shaky throughout.
