Oh really? I've used the Overground a fair bit and only ever seen 4 carriages. I'm not doubting you though!

It depends on the platform length. The length of trains on the Barking-Gospel Oak line is severely limited because of this, and so is that of the Welwyn/Hertford North-Moorgate services. The West Anglia lines have much longer platforms.

According to this:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/archive/27861.aspx

They are rolling out an upgrade from 4 carriages to 5 carriages (except Barking-Gospel Oak line). So looks like we will have, at most, a 5 car carriage replacing the 8 car one.

I can't seem to find exact carriage capacities. The Overground version (BR 378) has less seats and more standing room, whilst the Greater Anglia ones (BR 318) have more seats, less standing. So looks like we have to get used to standing 30 minutes+ for the commute into London.

That's for existing Overground lines. The article says quite specifically that there will be new four-car units, which will presumably double up at peak times.

Are you sure they are that frequent?

Barking to Gospel Oak timetable are approx every 15 minute and Watford Junction to Euston are approx every 20 minutes (morning peak time)

Like @TottenhamLegend I have only seen and heard of Overground trains to be 4 carriages long. Greater Anglia use 8 at peak time, every 15 mins. Overground carriages are also smaller than rail carriages. Unless TFL run at least 8 carriages then we could lose a fair bit of capacity.

Ah, it's the difference between Overground and overground, huh? :p Greater Anglia run the Chingford - Liverpool St line, so i guess they also run the trains out past Bruce Grove etc. I know that they definitely both run 4's & 8's between Chingford & Liverpool St.

London Overground must be assuming responsibility for them in some form i guess, unless this is the result of some concerted campaign to get East Anglia's trains on the London map.

Yep, done that. It says 25 new stations.

What do you think I'm missing?

It's 25 new stations to the Overground Network, not proper brand spanking new stations. All they're doing is taking over the operation of the line from whoever does it now, much like they did a few years back with the old Silverlink services. I used the Overground a lot when I was living in London and found it to be very reliable and the trains are more like underground ones so there's more standing space. If the carriages are reduced from 8 to 4 or 5 I don't think it'll make much difference in the overall scheme of things as there's so much standing space, not to mention the fact that the trains are completely open all the way through instead of having doors between carriages.

But... trains already link Chingford & Liverpool St, and White Hart Lane station is already linked to the same, via Hackney Downs. Is this article basically just announcing that they are going to be added to the main map? Or that there is to be new stations built to go with it? Or a new dedicated service that will run in place of those already running?

Must admit, i've confused myself more as i've typed this.
Thats how I read it too. No change just relabelled.

Much more standing space on Overground carriages than the Anglia ones, no doors between the carriages too, so it's like one big carriage in essence. Should be able to fit a lot of people in sardine style on match days.

I moved down to Forest Hill from Hornsey this year, and I love the Overground network, apart from when they do track work on some weekends.

So Overground is to Underground as S-Bahn is to U-Bahn?

I would expect frequency of trains to increase in that case.

Please don't compare German transport to London. You'll just hurt yourself.

It's shocking how from small villages to massive metropolises, German public transport just shits all over London's

Not shocking at all. It's what happens when you are the first with anything. New cities will be planned with modern transport in mind. It's the fault of the brits for being too innovative.

My hometown from the years 0-19. Well done, good move.
