Which I see as a positive

Ah, yes... the old French prisoner in the woods ITK. That's from a few years ago now. Must say i haven't actively followed his progress, anyone else know?

linked with Man City a month or so ago. When there was loads of articles floating about them having to up their English contingent. So I suspect bullshit.

And he's gone...
Why didn't AVB get him for us!
£12 million. Absolute steal.

£12 million? Good lord. While I appreciate Poch taking the time of consideration to evaluate the squad, it's deals like this at an obvious position of need that makes me feel it's still not entirely disadvantageous to make strong steps towards securing players like this.

I wonder what his wages are, I can't believe we would have had no interest for that fee

Only 12 mil, I thought it was going to be closer to 20. That's an absolute steal. Wish we had got him. If we end up spending near 20 mil on Lovren I won't be happy.

Again though, on an individual basis of talent, I absolutely agree that difference in price would be pretty ridiculous. But you have to take into account difference in wage demands, and the specific impact Lovren would hold due to being familiar with Poch, his tactics, and Lloris with a young squad trying to make that transition. I cannot stress enough how vital those advantages are, and I think that's why Poch seems to be targeting Lovren rather heavily, if not even primarily.

He's obviously gone there for the money. The player may have gone for less than his perceived value, but people need to look at the whole picture and take wages and bonuses into consideration. The player and his agent probably got millions in terms of a signing on fee, plus his wages and bonuses will most likely be too rich for our tastes. We're just not going to be able to compete with that kind of cash being (almost literally) thrown at players.

Not sure that's strictly true. It's a pretty similar situation really, just for more money and a (by all accounts) fascinating city. He'll be challenging for a title, playing CL football. It's not like the Portuguese league is a quantum deal superior to the Russian.

Benfica have been in european finals, they have arguably more talent (other than Witsel and Hulk, I think Benfica are better), have less racism

The Portuguese league is stronger compared to Russia as Zenit are the PSG of russia with the top 10 most expensive transfer pretty much all being zenit players that are there now.
