As a 49 year old thinking back 40 years I'm pretty sure that winning the cup was almost - almost - as good as winning the league. Thats how important it was and as a yid I have some wonderful memories of it. The Premier League and the CL are all consuming now which is probably a generational, evolulutionary thing - not a criticism of todays fans but the irrepressible pressure from the football authorities and TV companies.

every tournament entered is important,... if the club deem a tournament unimportant, then they should not enter. simples... :pompous:

FA cup is far more important. and harder to win. that said, i'd prefer we focus on the Capital One Cup because we have a great chance to win it and need a long and exhaustive run for the FA.

I want the FA Cup more and I want us to reclaim our supremacy in that competition. However since we're just 3 games away from holding the League Cup, we should go for it hammers and tongs. 3 Cups and a top 4 finish will turn Poch into a legend in just one season.

It is only 3 pm in Toronto and a little early to dream.

So I am guessing you would rather win the FA cup because of traditional values the cup holds? I think it's only a matter of time until fans start changing their focus because like you said it does make for a better completion and I love the idea of having two legs in the semi final to reach the ultimate final which is held at a packed out Wembley. I believe the cup structure of the league cup is a lot more appealing than the FA.
Yeah, I agree. It would be nice if people took it more seriously, because once you get to the quarters onwards I feel it is often just as difficult to win, as teams will commit a lot more to winning it and you do very often get the big clubs in the latter stages as they use it as tool sharpener for the players that don't play week in week out. There's no second strings put out once you get to the business end of the competition though

To be fair no one really cares about the FA cup unless you win it either

What makes them more important than they once were is the fact that the top teams want to win them again due to there being more top teams hoovering up all the trophies and managers realising that silverware can at least take some pressure off them from the board and the fans

I haven't bothered to watch an FA cup final for a long time, unless Spurs are involved I really don't care.

Like Last year when Arsenal played Hull in the FA cup final it was the same to me as when they played Birmingham in the league cup final - I wanted them to lose cos they're Arsenal and I have gooner friends and family who I wanted to suffer from a cup final defeat but it wasn't the fact it was the FA cup they won that pissed me off it was because it was cup in general and I'd have wanted them to lose and been pissed that they won just the same had it been the League cup

I can see older Spurs fans still valuing the FA cup much more due to the affinity we as a club once had to the Cup, when we were the record times winners etc.

I've only seen us win it once though, and many more fans have never seen us win it at all plus other clubs like Man U and Arsenal have long surpassed our record and Chelsea have pretty much caught us with their recent wins alone

So that affinity for anyone under the age of 35 no longer really exists and it's just a matter of Spurs winning some silverware and for myself anyway whether it be the FA, LEague or Europa I wouldn't place much more value in one other the other really I'd be equally happy for us to win any......well obviously this year I'd prefer Europa because of the CL place it offers

I would certainly put more emphasis on the EL cup as that gives us a CL place. This will increase our fan base well wide and our club revenue as well - not forgetting attracting top players who us the fans can enjoy watching.

It isn't always harder to win the FA Cup. E. g. Last time Spurs won the League Cup, as compared to the years when Pompey and Arsenal won the FA Cup, largely thanks to lucky draws and minnow upsets.

Yea I agree

I know a lot of people point to our last CL run and say it didn't change anything - which to be fair is true (aside from perhaps VdV who maybe would have been out of our reach without CL football)

But I have personally witnessed first hand how our profile rose across Europe from performing well in the CL (I've told the story here more than once but I have family in Rome and pre CL their friends really didn't know who were and after it they were raving about us, Modric, VdV and Bale)

And of course we all know how CL football benefits the clubs finances

I don't think one season will magically enable us to attract loads of star players because we'll still be restricted by our wage cap and by rivals competing for those players with more money and greater pulling power - though it may make some small impression......but also CL football and playing against the best team in Europe would surely be great for the development of our best young players too

If I could choose one of the 3 for us to win it would be Europa of course but because we're in the semi already I am most focused on our chances of winning the League cup

Love the F.A cup, but it has lost a bit of it's gloss in recent times, with clubs prioritising other competitions.
I would like to see the winner given the 4th place CL spot.
That would make it much more competitive again.
Plus add a bit to the magic of it all, with non-league and lower league fans and players dreaming of winning the cup and then playing in the Champions League.

The League cup format is ok until the latter stages, especially if you are still in the Europa cup. A 2 leg mid-week semi final 7 days apart and the final at a time when the FA cup is underway(with possible replays) is a real problem to manage the intervening league games. Added to which, the effect on the winning team in past seasons , including us in 2008, has been a distinct hangover -we hardly won a league game and went out of the Europa, Birminghan got relegated, and Swansea went on a terrible losing run- I think it is hard to handle the euphoria of winning a major trophy with so much of the season still to go. I still find it hard to believe that we managed to beat Chelsea that season( in Extra time) having played a Europa league game less than 72 hours earlier- It truly was a remarkable effort for which not enough credit was given. Disappointingly we may be heading for an even worse situation this year unless the club can do something about it(doubtful) as, if we get there, we are away to Fiorentina on the previous Thursday night compared to a home game in 2008.

For me, this one is simple.

The FA Cup used to qualify the winner for the Cup Winner's Cup. That was quite a prestigious competition to be in, from my memory, and I used to enjoy it more than any of the Champions League stuff these days. It was a competition made up soley of domestic cup winners. As soon as that went, so did the glamour of the FA Cup.

In addition, Sky sort of ruined a lot of competitions by hogging the TV rights. When the FA Cup used to be good it was a spectacle in itself on TV, prime time slots meant that it would be family viewing. These days, with hundreds of channels, it's not really the same thing.

The League Cup offers equal or similar rewards and could be seen as more exclusive as it isn't a competition that non-league sides are allowed to enter. Or, at least as 'exclusive' as perhaps the Europa could now be seen.

I would love for us to win a trophy, regardless of what it is, but the nostalgia in me would prefer the FA Cup even if the sentiment is lost these days.

Winning any cup is an accomplishment even if people think it's the second most important cup.

FA cup has lost a bit of shine, whereas the League cup seems to have gained a bit. I'm happy both are being taken more seriously than they were 10 years ago.

I started supporting Spurs because of watching the FA cup final 81 - Ossie, Ricky, Hoddle et al. Winning it again in 82 against QPR cemented me a Yid for life!

But I will admit a lot of the gloss has gone in recent times. Case in point, we are two games away from Wembley in the league cup so winning that cup would be my preference this season so that we can concentrate on getting 4th in the EPL. To put it another there is equity with regards to either cup IMO, so either will do.
