Love the F.A cup, but it has lost a bit of it's gloss in recent times, with clubs prioritising other competitions.
I would like to see the winner given the 4th place CL spot.
That would make it much more competitive again.
Plus add a bit to the magic of it all, with non-league and lower league fans and players dreaming of winning the cup and then playing in the Champions League.

That's exactly why it will never happen. It would devalue the Champions League massively if Millwall et al were allowed to qualify from outside the top tier. It's bad enough with also-rans as it is.

Have to agree. As per my previous post, when they stopped the Cup Winner's Cup it meant that the winner went into the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) instead.

What UEFA really should do, in my humble opinion, is make the CL more exclusive (a domestic league winner's cup/mini-league only) and raise the platform for the Europa a little more. By integrating the current CL also-rans (teams which always are in it but haven't won their league for ages) into the Europa, it would perhaps make it more entertaining to watch without the awful third rate eastern european league teams and might make it a bit more prestigious.

They should do that after we've had a chance to win it first, though :D

It's a strange one. I'm turning 30 this coming August. That means that our last FA cup final was before I turned 6, which for me at least predates any real footballing memories I hold. In that time, I have been in attendance at four League Cup finals, seeing us win twice, and hold dear some other truly wonderful League cup moments (5-1 over both London Rivals in semi's, turning over Liverpool away when we were complete underdogs in 98), though admittedly travelling to fucking Cardiff to see us get turned over by a newly promoted Blackburn was very unpleasant. So in my lifetime the League Cup has given me more moments which, at this time, I attach sentiment too. This probably both adds, and takes away, from the League Cup in the 'which is more important' question as far as I am concerned, because while the League Cup has given me more to treasure, the elusiveness of an FA Cup means that I crave it far more. This is of course exacerbated by the fact that, like most Spurs fans of my generation, I was enticed into supporting Spurs by my father during a poor period in our history where a glorious past was the main reason go for Spurs (when all the other kids at School were Arsenal or Man Utd supporters), and in that glorious past it is the FA Cup which comes up most often:

First trophy Spurs obtained in 1901?
To this day only club to win which trophy as a non-league club?
At the age of becoming interested in football (in the early 90's) the trophy which Spurs had won more of than any other club?
The trophy which formed one half of Spurs becoming the first 20th Century club to achieve the double?
Gazza's free kick in the semi final of which competition?
Ricky Villa scored the best goal Wembley has seen in the final of which competition?

And many more grand tales.

Taking into account all of the above, if told at the start of the season that Spurs would win one of these trophies and I could choose which, it would have to be the FA Cup. I love the League Cup, it's provided me more joy than any other competition as a Spurs supporter and I'll be ecstatic to win it again. Like the FA Cup, we are also the third most successful team in this competition, it provides the same prize at the end of it (Europe and a trophy) and it involves winning a showpiece game at Wembley. I'd also argue that it is at least as difficult to win, if not mores so, as it's quality is not diluted by teams from non-league football and the fixtures are three days after and before Premier League games, not on a Saturday with (on the whole) a week on either side of the game. However, it's still the FA cup that I was brought up on and it is still an FA Cup final that I have yet to witness. I've attended us losing in four semi finals, (Newcastle, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Chelsea) and of course clearly remember the Everton and Arsenal losses too, so just to see us get to the FA Cup Final would be hugely exciting, and to win it would probably mean more to me than any achievement I've see at Spurs so far, and that includes qualifying for the Champions League.

FA Cup.

However, the League Cup and FA Cup have both had their stock enhanced due to PL clubs needing to have strong squads now and in turn needing the Cups to keep their squads active.

I used to love the FA Cup, but it has over the last few years devalued itself. It used to be the main thing to play the final at Wembley at 15:00 on the last saturday, but now the semi's are there(which they never should be), plus Sky keeps changing the time of kick off and what day it is to suit them, I have lost all interest in the FA Cup.

Are arsenal still playing children?
Or at least claiming to be playing children?

As long as they do that as well as other bigger clubs then it's still an inferior competition.

However!
I much prefer the format of the league cup now it's got no 2 leg games other than the semi and no replays. It means teams don't play for the draw and there isn't too much intrusion into the other competitions with fixture pile ups.

I decided to make to this into a poll as there are mix emotions for both cups. It would be interesting to see the final outcome.

You place that joke of a competition which now has filthy Champions League rejects in it, above the prestige of the original UN-TAMPERED FA Cup? The oldest football competition in the world? Come on. If it was still the un-tampered UEFA Cup I'd probably be with you.

I remember the days when the FA cup meant more to the players and fans by managers fielding their strongest team. Now their is all this talk from pundits about how the players don't take the cup seriously anymore and that it's losing it's appeal.

However, I have noticed that people talk more about the Capital one cup which seem more important and talked about from pundits, managers and fans? Is this true or is it just me. I would be interested to hear peoples opinion on this.
Well Let me see now...
On the one hand, you have the Mickey Mouse Cup...

Odd timing of the question though which in my view possibly skews your answers.
We are in the Semi-Final of a cup, with a good chance of reaching the final... presumably against Chelsea (who we beat last time and last week), but possibly Liverpool, who we have been competing with recently and would love to beat as well.

Vs a trophy for competition we have yet to start in.

We will in most likelihood field "weakened" teams for as long as we are in the FA Cup until it in itself gets serious, due to other competitions we are focussed on.

We were we knocked out of the League cup I bet no one would vote for it and similarly were it the beginning of the season, most of the votes would be for the FA Cup.

I am discounting the other competitions purely because the OP asked to compare these two.

Our focus is very much on the League Cup. We have a great chance of at least being in the final and hey if you are in the final, you have a chance of winning it, so its important!

The FA Cup, well if we went out tonight I bet most of us wouldn't be overly distraught as we have other more immeditate priorities.

I do sir.

Fa cup gets you a tiny bit of money and a europa place. Doesn't really send out ripples outside of England

The europa gets you a tiny bit of money, then potentially a lot more money if you qualify to cl group stage along with the huge exposure PLUS you get a one off shot at the champions in the super cup = more.money and more prestige/exposure

We've been lucky this season with all our ties being at home, and I've really enjoyed going to all of them, under the lights, with some really good games on the way. I'll be at the Sheff Utd tie as well and if we make it to Wembley then I'll be at the head of the queue for those tickets... seeing us going all the way from game one will be very, very special for me. And you shouldn't sniff at a tournament that's given us our only silverware over the last 20 years.

The 3rd round of the FA Cup is good for obvious reasons, seeing the non-league teams like Blyth Spartans etc getting a big tie, with some proper cloggers thwacking premier league players in the knee (like that Blyth lad did on Zigic). But once you get to the 1/4, 1/2 finals its no different to a big stakes premier league game. And the semi final played at Wembley bit just takes a shine off it.

Either/both.

For us, I don't think there is much difference between them in terms of prestige/long-term gain. Of course, the FA Cup has a much older and more vaunted history and historically we have had our own special relationship with that Cup, but it has been devalued considerably by the increasing importance of the Premier League and European competitions, especially the Champions League. The League Cup has also been devalued but, as it was already devalued by the FA Cup, the effect has been less profound. Now Premier League clubs are just as likely to select a 'weakened' team for FA Cup ties as they are for League Cup ties.

In terms of format, I actually prefer the League cup. I like the night games, the no replays, the semi-finals played over two legs and the final being in February. By contrast, the scheduling of FA Cup ties often gives the competition a sluggish feel and playing the semi-finals at Wembley takes away from both the semi-finals and the final.
