Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has reflected on his side’s disappointing end to the season having been forced to sit out the club’s trio of defeats against Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and Wigan Athletic. The Gunners will now finish the season without silverware for the fifth consecutive year; a tough state of affairs for the young Spaniard who is now fully focused on recovering his fitness in time for the World Cup.
Arsenal had been firmly in the title hunt until a last-gasp injury-time equaliser by Birmingham City at St Andrews at the end of March. However it was the negative score-line in the must-win North Londn derby against Tottenham Hotspur which firmly put the nail in the Gunners coffin.
Speaking to the Arsenal official matchday programme, injured Fabregas revealed that he watched his teammates tackle Tottenham Hotspur from his home in Spain.
“I watched the Tottenham game on TV and although we had a lot of possession we didn’t really have a go at them.
“I thought Spurs were playing strange football for a home team – they just had eight or nine players behind the ball, and hit us on the counter-attack.
“Then they defended again in their own area, so in a way it was typical English football, but we didn’t have enough penetration to get through them – except for the last five minutes when we created chances.
“To be honest I think that was probably the game that ended our hopes of winning the title. Manchester United had drawn and Chelsea didn’t play because they were in the FA Cup, so we would have bee right in there had we won the game.”
Arsenal followed the 2-1 defeat against their local rivals with an equally below par performance against Wigan. Leading 2-0 with 11 minutes remaining the Latics hit back with three quick-fire strikes to ease their relegation woes.
Despite the poor run of results, Arsene Wenger’s squad look almost certain to wrap up third place in the Premier League. A single point in either of their last two games against Blackburn Rovers and Fulham means that the north London side will ensure an automatic route into the group stages of the Champions League.

Would you say that what he said was wrong? Thats exactly how the game went. They had the majority of the posession and we cut through them until the final few minutes when we went under the kosh a bit.

I love it that he says it effectively ended their title hopes. They obviously thought the best way to be sure was to go and capitulate to Wigan

I cant really argue with him. They had all the possession and we hit them on the counter attack and we did defend really deep.

"They defended their own area"

What does he expect exactly? For us to say, go on Bendtner... you're never going to get through us if we bother trying... so go on... through you go... have a shot, son! Hold on... we'll even take Heurelho Gomes out of the way...

He's not wrong in what he says. And it's brilliant that our defeat of them clearly STINGS... a lot!

We played a million times better against Chelsea... and Chelsea players, in fairness to them, aren't bitching like little girls about the fact we beat them. They just bounced back and hammered Stoke. Fair play.

Is that not called tactics? leave no space - to counter arsenal's style of play.

hmmm... my only critisism of the article is that he doesnt even appear to know when we played them?

He states that man united had drawn (correct), and chelsea hadnt played as they were in the FA cup? is that right? did they not play on the tuesday night? Wasnt the fact that we were in the FA cup the reason this game was not on the saturday?

Even if we'd done that, they'd still have been inclined to pass

I would argue that, he was wrong to call it 'strange'. Surely that is the best way to play a team like Arsenal.

He is trying to take a cheap shot at us in the same way that Moriniho did with the parked bus comment.

We had our tactics for the game, our team stuck to them very well and came out deserved winners, end of.

And Gomes could have put out a deckchair for 80 minutes after that early scare from Judas. All the chances they created came in the last few minutes after Wenger put van Pervie on.
