First time I have seen it in colour.

Thx LL.

Is it a famous pic TCO? And did it cause consternation at the time cos he was smoking a fag or didn't people care at the time? (er...only if you were around at the time ofcourse, not assuming anything).

Greavsie used to have three pints and a full english before playing a game in those days.

There have been quite a few pics in the dressing room with others smoking ciggies.

It was accepted in those days.

They used to say Gillie took a whisky and a fag at half time.

He was still looking lean; and the badge on the jersey must mean that it was before 1966. And he really looked good; must be before he had jaundice.

And didn't we have more balding players in those days too? Or was it just they were more noticeable cos of the dodgy combovers a la Charlton (Bobby of that ilk).

I really must read his autobiography asap.

Ardiles, Sheringham, David James & Zidane all smoked (but not in the dressing room)

I'm on a mission to find another photo with a cup in the background and Spurs players smoking

That just makes me respect him so much less

Why ?

in those days smoking was seen pretty much as the norm, and considering the opponents weren't exactly super athelets it didn't stop Grevesie from scoring loads of goal's did it ?

Be diiferent today of course but that was then

I just don't like people who smoke (when they smoke), so for professional footballers to do it just makes it much worse.

Smoking was promoted as being healthy and good for you, during WW1 & WW2 cigarettes were part of a soldiers rations.

These were proper fags, not girly ones with filters but stonking full strength tabs.
Only in the 50s and 60s people began to realise the health implications.

Smoking? SMOKING??? During the First World War, you could go into Harrods and buy a 'Comfort Package' for a soldier that contained laudunum, cocaine and heroin.

As you say, attitudes change...

ED: Great picture of Greavsie

Billy Bremner lighting up after 1970 FA Cup Semi Final replay after beating Man Utd.

Highbury dressing room 1947 - Wally Barnes and Archie Macauley have a quick fag.

It really was the norm and smoking wasn't seen as harmful to health back then.

Back then, no-one could have cared less.

Greavesie and Venables used to nip out at half-time for a quick pint at the Corner Pin, and Best frequently played half-cut (and was still too good for just about anyone to cope with).
