It really wasn't that long ago that players smoked heavily. Ten (okay, twelve) years ago, I was in the players lounge after most Brighton games and only 2 of them didn't smoke and all drank heavily within an hour or 90mins of the end of the game. Mind you, they did nearly lose their league status that year.

And it isn't just footballers, at the Malaysian Open a few weeks back, Nick Dougherty and Darren Clarke barely let a hole go by without lighting up. Made me have no end of respect for the cameramen and producers of the live golf coverage on the telly who obviously have to avoid catching them mid-puff.

I'd rather see someone smoking than spitting and, as pointed out, cigarettes were promoted as healthy and good for you up until the 70's

Flatters, stop being so gay

Don't they have a 'royalty free' section? meaning the ones with their watermark are fine to distribute...

Cool pictures. Although lets face it, none of even the best players back then could compete in today's top level @ their peak playing careers.

I just don't like people who smoke (when they smoke), so for professional footballers to do it just makes it much worse.

But you're applying today's morals and health guidelines to a previous era. An era when most people did smoke and it was not seen as a problem at all, but an accepted part of life, if not a stylish pastime with added cache!

Smoking was promoted as being healthy and good for you, during WW1 & WW2 cigarettes were part of a soldiers rations.

These were proper fags, not girly ones with filters but stonking full strength tabs.
Only in the 50s and 60s people began to realise the health implications.

I would say the 70s myself. With those World in Action documentaries with a diseased lung in a jar. By then people who'd smoked for decades (my parents) were hooked so it was hard to be condemnatory.

Billy Bremner lighting up after 1970 FA Cup Semi Final replay after beating Man Utd.

Highbury dressing room 1947 - Wally Barnes and Archie Macauley have a quick fag.

It really was the norm and smoking wasn't seen as harmful to health back then.

Great pics, thanks. Full of atmosphere, and the post match fluid intake seemed to consist of a cup of char or a bottle of beer! Hang the water or isotonic drinks!
