Not a good move by Mr Capello :duh:
Dont think he has the same leadership quality of Gerrard

Gerrard is not such a great captain. Ferdinand will likely be given the Man Utd captaincy next (he's worn the armband a lot this season with Neville out and Giggs often on the bench) and so he must be pretty suited to it.

He's not definitely captain though. Capello is just giving it to him for this friendly match and will make a decision on a permanent captain in the future.

A great decision. He is a truly great player and I do not understand why so many people slag him off. Is it because of that drug test fiasco?

I would have Ferdinand ahead of any other central defender in the world.

It's because of a few reasons.

Firstly, he's seen as a bit dopey and a bit of a knob with that whole "Brap Brap", "You got merked!" shite. Fair enough, but that has nothing to do with his fantastic footballing ability.

Secondly, he's been unfairly portrayed as a player lacking concentration who makes a lot of mistakes. This may have been the case somewhat in the past, but it was definitely exaggerated and is now used against him by clueless 'football fans' who probably see him play a few times a season. Chances are these people also think Soccer AM is the best programme on TV.

Finally, he doesn't fit the mould of a typical English centre back. He's not seen as the 'rock at the back' like Bobby Moore or the 'brave lion-heart' like John Terry. This is down to English stupidity when it comes to football. The media praise players who stick their head in where it hurts and run around like headless chickens for 90 minutes more than those players who are blessed with incredible skill and natural ability. This is the same reason why people incredibly think Vidic is better than Ferdinand when all evidence would suggest otherwise. English fans want to see their players getting stuck in and wearing their heart on their sleeve; it's encouraged on the sidelines of Sunday league teams from when kids are very young. This is where 'our' priorities are all wrong.

When someone like Alan Hansen, a great ex-Liverpool defender, is praising Ferdinand week after week particularly after splendid performances against his old club you can't really argue that Ferdinand is not top class. Also, when David O'Leary - a great central defender - is willing to spend 18 million on a 22 year old defender, he must be something special!

He captained Leeds a lot. Also it will probably make him concentrate a hell of lot more than he normally does. So glad its not Terry. Hope Terry doesn't start. The ****.

Goof choice if you ask me, ever present, and lets be honest, Terry isn't exactly the most liked person in the team, comes across as a right arrogant twat.

That doesn't make him a great captain though. Yes, you want an ever present type, but you don't just pick your captain on how good a player he is.

I'd rather him than Terry, but as has been said, Capello hasn't made a final choice yet.

There's enough captains in our side that I don't think it makes a huge difference on the field. The England captain is a representative for his team and for his country and in that respect, Becks was superb.

Excellent choice. Definately the best defender england have at the moment and would love to see Woodgate along side him as he deserves it based on form but, that won't happen.

Anyone to be fair would be a better choice than that **** Terry.

He's been captain of United for large parts of this season, so you're wrong.

Gerrard was once a good captain of Liverpool, questionable this season & but he never leads anyone in an England shirt. When Gerrard starts putting in half decent performances for England he may well be made captain.

No. Wrong in YOUR opinion. I think i am right. I also think the captian of the national team should be a club captian too. My opinion.

He'll probably be captain of United next season since Neville and Giggs haven't got much, if anything, left in them.

Would being the captain of potentially back to back champions of England be good enough for you?
