In a previous thread some time back we had a lengthy discussion on whether it was better to win a trophy or finish fourth in the league. I was strongly in favour of winning a trophy and after just about climbing down from cloud 9 after a wonderful experience at wembley I was wondering if any of the peeps on here who preferred the league position have changed their minds, especially interested if the whole wembley experience and seeing Ledders walk up those steps to collect the cup have put you in the correct group.

CL for me still, but looking at it in hindsight, we needed a cup win to get the right mentality to even challenge for that spot.

Are you sitting on the fence Kendall.

I think winning trophies brings confidence to a squad, it gives them confidence in winning big games, if you start to win big games you can then translate that to the league, our cup win will know have some teams thinking, are Spurs on the up? Is this Ramos fella a bit special, it means we might, just might have a few teams more worried about us, which is never a bad thing.

Trophies, trophies, trophies. Always the trophies. I'd love us to be in the Champions League, but only so that we could win it. I want to win competitions rather than just qualify for them.

I wouldn't trade Sunday for all the fourth-placed finishes in the world.

Financially - 4th.
Glory - cups.

I can't ever remember a week like we've had on here, 99.9% of posters have been behind the team, there were one or two bitching about certain players performances in the final but on the whole we were all in great form thanks to us winning the cup so I'm all for that.

Sums it up nicely. Yea it'd be great to finish 4th and reap the financial benefits and maybe attract bigger stars because of champs league football.

But I don't think anything can beat the glory, the buzz and excitement of winning silverware. A day like sunday I'll always remember, watching spurs at wembley beat our rivals mkII, it'd be great to go for 4th next season but I'd love even more to have another day like sunday.

Well said mr hax, I do realise the finances of being fourth and I really want us in there, but I always fall on the side of glory, I've found the taste for it again and I want more!!!!

Maybe not, but in the same breath you get people having a pop because we didn't want to pay Petrov £60k per week :)

I think the cup was what we needed now--fantastic way to build confidence. I still think that our ultimate goal should be CL football; but if we keep winning cups I am not going to complain, I wouldn't trade that day for anything.

Winning a Cup after our disastrous start to the season was a realistic target this time round.

Its a platform for the future.

while it's true the CL brings money - money is only of value if it#s translated into glory - which almost always means trophies -

so for me winning on sunday was bigger than if we'd won that day in may at upton park -

of course who knows maybe CL that year would have brought better players and trophies - but much as I like Jol - I doubt it - much better that we have a trophy now and Ramos as our leader

there are no settings in world football to match Wembley - a game like that would have gone out to a global audience of hundreds of millions - it was massive - we won it- and for me I'll take that any day - though of course I want CL too

incidentally don't let's forget the TV deal makes the Prem a far richer competition than the CL - the money for winning the prem is far greater - the money for even finishing bottom of the prem as far as prize money goes is bigger than winning the CL now I believe - we're already stacked with cash - we want more of course - even more we want glory - we got some last sunday

oh we're off to Wembley cos we beat the Arsenal - it's got a ring to it -

we're off to Latvia cos we finished 4th doesn't have the same pizzazz - for remember as Everton found out - 4th place means you get the chance to qualify for the CL - and a lot of the early games aren't tha glamorous

we've already beaten two of the best CL teams in AFC & CFC to win the Carling - we've knocked another cL team slavia out of the UEFA 2 seasons running - we're about to play another 'CL team' in PSV - there's loads of glory and cash around ATM

I concur, it would be great to be in the Champions League, especially the first time, but it is more a means to end (unless you win it). If we qualified even 2 or 3 years in a row, but it led to no trophies then I don't see how it could be seen as a complete success. Newcastle and Leeds have both played in the Champions League, but it didn't lead them anywhere. Don't get me wrong the chance to play against teams like Barcelona and AC Milan would be so sweet, but ultimately it's about winning things. Hopefully if things keep improving then it will not be a case of either or.
