I hate the false dichotemy that is always presented between data analysis and intuitive decision making. You need to do both in purchasing a player. When the data and the subjective perception point in the same direction then it makes sense to buy a player. The trick though is getting people who know how to do this. Redknapp didn't rely on data for example, but his intuition couldn't even tell him that Suarez was worth picking up. The genuises at our club watched Suarez play for Ajax over and over and decided that he wasn't good enough. Shows you what we're dealing with.

Anyway, there isn't a two-pronged choice between AVB-esque and Redknapp-esque, there has to be a balance and we need someone who can think two-dimensionally in this case.
