Gilberto dedicated his goal against West Ham to his team-mates.

The Brazilian entered the fray for his debut in the Barclays Premier League and second appearance for the club with 58 minutes on the clock and struck his first Spurs goal to make it 3-0 with five minutes remaining. Darren Bent completed the scoring in injury time after Dimitar Berbatov's double put us in the driving seat at half-time.

It was a fine goal from Gilberto, turning on a sixpence to control and shoot low into the corner after Aaron Lennon dummied Pascal Chimbonda's pass.

In doing so, he became only the ninth Spur to score on his Premier League debut and went some way to erasing the memory of his debut four days earlier when his mistake led to PSV scoring the only goal of our UEFA Cup Round of 16 first leg at the Lane.

"The goal made me very happy because after PSV I felt bad, I made a mistake and Farfan scored the goal," reflected Gilberto. "I wanted to thank the players because after the PSV game they said 'come on Gilberto, keep your head up' and that was very important for me.

"A few days later and I played again, scored my first goal for Tottenham and I'm very happy.

"When I scored I wanted to run to the bench, I wanted to run to the fans but the players quickly came to me. They helped me so much after PSV and that goal was for them."

I'm starting to like Gilberto a lot more now, he just had an unlucky start against PSV when he stupidly lost possession outside the box and he was punished by Farfan.

I was delighted to see him score on Sunday, and great to see him swarmed by his team-mates in delight. I think he will quickly become popular with the fans, and seems to be making some good friends within the team.

We have a good spirit in the squad and it's good to see the new lads have been accepted quickly as that will really help that settle.

I'm confident Gilberto will prove a good signing, he just had a very unfortunate debut.

great goal and all that, but the game seemed to be a bit quick for him. he needs to get used to the tempo pretty quickly, then he will start to blossom.

i know its a cliche, but its true

ofcourse every defender has to adapt to the pass, and hopefully he has a lot more time to do it now the league is no longer a prioraty, I still wanna finish above the spammers tho

Really pleased for Gilberto. The prefect response to the PSV howler to be honest and that should lay that particular demon to bed for him!!

as long as it is just a matter of him adjusting to the pace and not him being too slow in general.

He looks like he could be good, showed some good technique (nice turn, finish, passing etc) just a last of pace and often the game seemed to wizz passed him.

But he is a Brazilan international and the majority of players take time to adjust to the league when they come over from other leagues so there is no reason to think he will not prove a valuable assest.

exactly he has had very little match time and to score already is more than we thought he would do the rest of the season probably in terms of goals

he is experienced he will come through that PSV mistake and prove a decent player for us at least for a few years

Not only score, but score the kind of goal a top striker would be pleased to own up to.

Not only score, but score the kind of goal a top striker would be pleased to own up to.

And it wasn't a fluke: 13 goals in 86 for Hertha, 9 in 54 for Gremio etc, and I'm sure he was often playing in defence.

His lack of pace isn't ideal, but players like Pires were hardly greyhounds, and adapted their game to the pace of the EPL. Gilberto has a sweet left foot, and apart from Bale, there aren't many of those around at the Lane...

The 949 commentators announced that it was Bent who'd scored. I'm not sure whether this was because they're both six-foot black slapheads or because defenders who can turn on a sixpence and shoot aren't something you come across every day.

I'm not sure that he does lack pace—he's way short of match practice, is still getting over a calf injury and is having to adjust to a much faster league. And, as you say, the best players' experience and positional sense enable them to compensate in any case.

I've been trying to think of the other Spurs players who scored on their debut. Off the top of my head, without recourse to Topspurs or the Miscellany, I've come up with Greavesie, Chivers, Richards, Defoe and Mido. There are another three.

Didn't a certain Glenn Hoddle have a record of scoring on his full debut (ie excluding substitute appearances) at every level? Eg Spurs in the league, England at youth, U21 (or U23?), full etc?

And I agree until he's fully fit and over his calf problems, we won't know quite how pacy (or otherwise) Gilberto really is.

Jeff Minton. Was at a 3:3 with Everton in which scored and I'm pretty sure it was his debut.

Colin Calderwood in the Intertoto?

Actually, I should have said 'league debut'. But that's right, Hoddle did too, of course.
