Fulham's chairman, Mohamed Al Fayed, will unveil a commemorative statue of Michael Jackson at Craven Cottage at 12pm on 3 April to honour the friendship he shared with the legendary singer.

Following Jackson's death in June 2009, Fulham's chairman commissioned a statue in his memory, which was originally planned to be erected outside his Harrods store. However, after the sale of the shop in Knightsbridge, it was decided that Craven Cottage was the best alternative for the tribute.

The statue, depicting the singer in one of his most iconic poses, is situated on the banks of the river Thames, adjacent to the Riverside and Hammersmith Stands at the stadium. "Michael Jackson was truly a legend, a term used too often in this modern world saturated in the hyperbole surrounding celebrity," said Fayed.

"He was my friend, a man with whom I shared many happy memories and who died a tragic and untimely death. He left behind a legacy of music so vast it takes one's breath away; from a precocious talent to an ingenuity and ground breaking modernity that shall never be repeated.

"It shall often be imitated, but it will never be replicated, Michael Jackson was, and shall always remain, one of a kind. I hope that many fans of his will visit the statue at the Cottage from far and wide, and that Fulham fans will appreciate seeing the finest performer in the world, in and amongst them, the finest fans in the world."

He should get Gadaffi there at the ceremony if Dr Mengele is not available.

Sick idea, regardless of his musical ability the guy got little boys drunk and slept in bed with them while in his 40's, even if no abuse took place Jacko is only marginally better individual than Glitter and does not deserve a statue

For which they, their families and friends along with any number of legal parasites were paid handsomely.
Whatever your feelings about Michael Jackson I defy you to name one entertainer with anything like the quality, style and talent of one of the musical giants of the 20th century, in fact just for fun I defy you to name anyone of today's crop of celebrity songsters with as much talent as his left foot.
All of which is a little beside the point when we can marvel at Mr Al Fayed's command of the faintly rediculous.:)

PS. I'm not even a Michael Jackson fan.

I wonder what the Fulham fans think of this. They would probably much rather have a statue of George Cohen or another of their legends close to the one they already have of Johnny Haynes.

Fayed (he isn't an Al-, as that is a noble title he cannot actually claim but decided he would add when he came to Britain) is definitely loco.

I have never disputed Jackson's talent as a performer, I even saw him live at Wembley at his peak and he was an incredible talent but Fulham is meant to be a family club they promote themselves as a family club so is it right for a family club to have as a statue a man who will forever be linked with child abuse ? a man who confessed to having little boys in his bed sleeping with him and getting them shitfaced on vodka is hardly someone to be honoured at a family orientated football club.

He was Honorary Director at Exeter City (alongside David Blaine), not sure we have the space to build a statue of him though.

Side issue really, doesn't matter if it was tomato juice the fact is sexual abuse or no sexual abuse he shared a bed with boys 1/5th of his age who were not related to him.

Suppose you had a 9 year old kid and they were sleeping in the bed of a 45 year old bloke in your street what would you do ? you would beat the guy to within an inch of his life and then beat him again so is it right that a family orientated club honour a man who let boys 1/5th his age share a bed with him ?

Wtf... If Jackson did not abuse the young boys then he is massively better than Glitter who is known child molester ffs. Sleeping in the same bed as a kid and abusing them are hugely different acts and should not be equated at all

Would Fayed need permission from the family to erect a statue of him? Surely he's only doing it for publicity and to get more bums on seats. As far as I know MJ had no connection with the club at all so why a statue there of him?

"After millions of dollars were spent by prosecutors and police departments in two jurisdictions on the jackson trial, two grand juries questioned close to 200 witnesses, including 30 children who knew Jackson, not a single corroborating witness could be found."

it's good to see that in these times where footballers and people in general are getting increasingly twatty that Al Fayed is refusing to change and is still bat-shit crazy.

Really warms the heart.

OJ Simpson is not a murderer in the eyes of the law.

Jackson was never convicted of child abuse, he had the money to buy off Chandler which would suggest he had something to hide, why didn't he go to trial over Chandler and debate the facts in open court if he had nothing to hide ? the fact he paid Chandler off is suspicious.

Are you a parent ? if you are would you let your kids go and sleep in a bed with a 45 year old neighbour ?

The answer is below

"After millions of dollars were spent by prosecutors and police departments in two jurisdictions on the jackson trial, two grand juries questioned close to 200 witnesses, including 30 children who knew Jackson, not a single corroborating witness could be found."

So Matt C thinks its illegal to be in a bed with any kid who's not related to you?

That might say more about you than it does about anyone else. I shall refer you to the words of a Mr Pip "Thou shalt not think that any male over the age of 30 that plays with a child that is not their own is a peadophile... Some people are just nice."

So statues eh?

Id like it to be based on this one
