I was going to start a thread on friday asking if you guys though Gallas was a liability? Having not watched too many games and reading match reports he seems to get a lot of flack and was genuinely interested.

Chelsea game comes and go's and its pretty much backed up why I wanted to ask the question.

The thing that worries me is if he has aeven the slightest of flaps in the next game some of the the fans are going to get on his back and then that ciould be the end of him.

Gallas was also very good against Villa. This bollocks about him being a liability is exactly that.

I've a lot of respect for Gallas. He's been great for us. But Daws should have been in his place for most of this season.

They're both equally good leaders. His tackling is every bit as good as William's. His positioning isn't far off (Gallas is usually excellent in that respect). Although he's no speed demon he's definitely quicker than the Frenchman. And crucially, his distribution is a million times better, launching those long diagonal balls to release our wingers. He's also a much bigger threat in the opposition's box.

The problem is that we are in effect two first choice CBs down at the moment, yes Gallas looks like he is close to being passed it, but as a back-up player he still is good enough to be in the squad.

Given our results over the last 5 PL games i would say he is doing a pretty adequate job for us, there are few teams in the PL that would do as well as we have with both their first choice CB's unavailable for those positions IMO.

So what does a 35 year old central defender who's had his best days, and is now well over the hill, have to do to get dropped for the next league game?

Directly at fault with Chelskis first 2 goals. If the first team squad has replacements for him surely he should be benched.

Is it not the same message the manager is supposedly giving out with the Freidal/Lloris debarkle??

The problem with that is that if we bench players any time they make a mistake then we are going to have an unsettled squad all season long. I thought Lennon and Defoe both had great games but they were hardly error free either.

Gallas is not our best CB at the moment, and he has had some dodgy moments this season. Same goes for Walker. But whilst Kaboul, BAE and Naughton aren't ready I don't think we can be too aggressive with our dropping of defenders.

There's a story about Southampton being ready to spend £7.5m on Dawson. I hope by Christmas Caulker, Vertonghen and Kaboul will be fit and ready as our first 3 choice CB's.

If AVB can scout someone that fits how he wants to play then maybe Southampton could take Dawson and Gallas. Though I'm happy enough to keep Gallas until the end of the season.

Not sure what it's got to do with him but apparently Steve Nicol's thoughts on Gallas aren't too dissimilar to many on here.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol ? Do me a fucking favour. Legend in his own living room maybe. Wonder what he thought of Gallas's display at OT ?

Not be as good as the alternative ?

Until that's the case I guess he should play. Maybe you are forgetting that with Ekotto and Kaboul out the only alternative is Dawson and he actually made a more fundamental error in his last game.

And how come we ignore some superb performances in the last few games from Gallas ?

When Kaboul and Ekotto are fit then I would expect Gallas may not start games and Kaboul,Caulker and Vertonghen are the future but until they are fit Gallas is a better player for us - especially trying to play a slightly higher line and press a bit more - right now.

I have always said that footballers will make mistakes, it's what they do the rest of the time that's important. (as long as those mistakes aren't too frequent)

We've just finished discussing this in the ratings thread and I'd hoped I was done with it, but the point about those clearances IMO was they are not indicative of what Gallas is usually about. CB's (in fact all players) frequently make less than perfect clearances (and by less than perfect I mean like Gallas's saturday where although they weren't great they still cleared the immediate area and out of the box etc) and usually they aren't punished, let alone twice.

If Gallas was doing similar every week, and had other inherent flaws manifesting every week that outweighed his abilities or skills you'd say fair enough, time to drop him. But for the last few weeks he's been our best defender, outstanding at Old Trafford for example, so you take those clearances for what they were and weighed in with what else he offers (most weeks) you take a view.

It's when players demonstrate continual inherent flaws in their game that you need to worry.

Gallas won't be a regular much longer as we have some great options in that position. But for a defence playing a higher line, the offside trap and trying to press better he's the right man for the moment with who's available.

William Gallas. I believe the purpose of playing Gallas was because he has the experience, no doubt he does however is showing signs of rapid decay. I truly have faith in Stephen Caulker who for me is ready to be trusted and proved so already this season IMO his potentially the best defender at the club.

I would without hestiation drop Gallas in favour of Caulker Vertonghen CB partnership until Kaboul returns whereby that will be an interesting decision for Vilas-Boas.

Gallas was immense against Man.Utd and is a great leader. Would take him over Daws any day. When BAE is back I would actually drop Caulker, think he was out of position a few times vs Chelsea but is a fantastic talent. Vergts/Kaboul when fit should be our n.o1 pairing, after that Gallas should be playing with one of those because of his experience, and following that Caulker should step in. Sorry but Dawson is not up to it anymore mostly due to how we now play, shame as he's a great lad.

Think Gallas over the last few seasons against the big teams has been incredible and was also amazing away vs Arsenal when we beat them also. However he is starting to really lose some strength, pace and once all our players are fit he should be on the bench, until then I would very much carry on with him.

Really can't see AVB dropping him and playing Verts and Caulker vs Saints with Naughton LB. No way, Gallas is a leader and we need those especially until Kaboul is back, who is an ideal candidate for our next captain.

Think this should however be his last season with us as next season combinations of Caulker,Vergts and Kaboul if all stay fit will be playing all games hopefully.
