It's not that people are getting their hopes up, I get that. He's a world class player, I understand why people want him back.

It's that no matter how negative a media update regarding why it would be nigh on impossible, some of the COB(Yep I am rolling with that from now on) have managed to still managing to spin it. I mean the report on how much he would be demanding as far as salary is concerned(might be true might not), has been countered with perhaps we could get him on loan? and maybe Real will pay part of his wages? Some of these in hope theories make the bible look like it was written by David Attenborough ffs.
I think there is a degree of self consciousness in how, what you term, the COB club spin negative news into hopeful news. I think pretty much everyone here things the odds of him coming are very low, but people want him to come so they try and find hope in things. Find anything to suggest he might come.

I mean I think we all really know deep down that he is not coming but that wont stop people trying to will it into existence. The premier league has finished the world cup yet to start people are trying to entertain themselves. No harm in it.

I don’t know if people wouldn’t - I think most people can just see there’s almost zero chance of it happening.

What I was mocking, is the sneering tone of some on here - passive aggressively mocking those who get their hopes up about it.

You should go to the beginning of this thread, there were a lot of people back then that did not particularly want Bale at all. Didn't see a place for him, questioned his work ethic, thought that he was well past it and too injury prone etc.

#thfc are confident that they can convince Gareth Bale to re-join the club from Real Madrid this summer with the promise of game time. [AS]

Is AS one of the better Spanish papers? Feel like they are. I know Marca are the Mouthpiece but I'm sure they are better regarded than Don Balon.

Where is the direct link at AS?

Found it:

An article about Bale's possible suitors. So no, he hasn't made it up, he's doing what all these people do. Hashing something together and trying to palm it off as something else.

the thing is Trix, we are all taught from the very start the when we receive info (ITK) we have to take it with a pinch of salt, as we all know plenty of it doesn't happen. on this occasion even though ITK is passing it on as bad news and not going to happen, some (Ok a lot of us) are still adding that salt.

I actually want it to happen because not only will we be signing a world class player, but money wise to the club he would bring in a fortune, and the atmosphere in the new stadium will be electric.

yes a very big chance we won't even be able to match his transfer fee because of what happened on Saturday, but his interview sounded like a plea for someone to come and get him. reports coming out that Ramos and Ronaldo both hoping he leaves (he looked a lonely man for someone that had just clinched the CL), and also the rumour of buying a house in Chigwell. you don't buy a house in Chigwell if your about to sign for Man U, and I very much doubt you buy a house in Chigwell if your staying at RM.

yes he is earning an absolute fortune, but because he has already earned a fortune, doesn't mean he would rather earn less and be a lot happier in his life as a person. I know many people that have changed jobs to be happy for less money, I'm typing as 1 at the moment even if the scales are 100's of thousands less.

all I know is if he signs I'll be over the moon, but worried that Kane might suffer less service, or they might just tear it up, but if he doesn't sign I'll be gutted and will never expect to see him in the lillywhite of Tottenham, but I won't be shedding any tears if he doesn't.

I will wait to hear the result of his meeting (which is meant to be in the next fortnight) and if he becomes available I will wait and see who he signs for. there aren't many clubs that can afford his reported fee or his wages, and the ones that can, there is a chance he might not want to play for them. I doubt it's just a case of wanting to play each week, I'm sure he will want to play every week for a team he wants to play for.

Right so they have basically rehashed the Independent article.

Just depends if the latter bit about us being confident is from a source or made up, as that wasn't in Delaney's article IIRC.

Well, I’m gonna continue to indulge my highly unrealistic fantasy and imagine him running out with Kane, Alli, Eriksen and others for our first game at the new stadium. Yes, yes, yes... I know there’s probably a better chance of Jimmy Hoffa being found than this wish... but I’m gonna keep hope alive!!!

OK.
COB's & KNOB's
Cult of Bale vs Known Naysayers of Bale

Many of the KNOB's have already acknowledged themselves as such.

I consider myself a more of a COB.
As long as there is even a glimmer of hope to sign him, I'll hang on to the notion.
Why?
Conservatively, he's a world top 10 player.
And there is no one else in his class in terms of stature, ability, & marketability, within a subjective top 10 list, that we could even "hope" to get. Therefore, if there is a means to getting him, we'd have to try.
Levy didn't put that clause in there for nothing. He had the foresight to do so because there's a reason.
And now Bale is seemingly unhappy thus giving us hope.

He knows that he would be welcomed & worshiped here.
He could bring that 'special something' to take this young team growing in prominence to the next level.
That is almost undeniable.
If he were to lead us to a League or CL Title, it would grant him even greater legendary status amongst us. It would be a far greater accomplishment than going to a moneybag / plastic club & winning there.

Granted, there would have to be some sort of act of benevolence or concessions on Bale's part towards us (ie wages / pay cut).
Saying that, nowhere have I read or heard that he wouldn't do such a thing.
In fact, I've read the opposite. That he could accept less in order to play regularly. Do I believe everything I read or hear? No.
But, there's that glimmer again.

Furthermore, I don't believe anyone is going to pay him what he gets at RM.
So he'll either stay or he'll take a pay cut anywhere else he may go.

How unlikely is his signing with Spurs? Quite.

But he hasn't signed elsewhere just yet so that glimmer is still there so I remain a COB.

Nice to see that this thread is going the way of the optimist, makes for a much more enjoyable experience on this site when this is the case IMO.

As others have alluded to, I think the majority of us are realistic about the chances of a Bale return and that it's unlikely, however, if there's a glimmer of hope then why not very well do that. Hope is a wonderful thing as long as you retain some sense of realism.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

If he doesn't come back then that's fair enough, I'm sure we can all understand how difficult it would have been to do a deal and so there's no need to get all down about it and start doom mongering if he ends up elsewhere. We'll have other targets.

But.....

....just imagine if he does come back. Think how glorious that would be. Rival fans would be absolutely sh*tting themselves at the prospect. It would also be a helluva way to christen our new stadium.

As I say, it's unlikely it happens but man, what a day it will be if it does.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

It's a bit like the national lottery in that everyone knows that the chance of winning is slim but that doesn't stop people buying a ticket.

I don't think there is any chance of us getting Bale but I would love to see him back in a Spurs shirt.

I am clinging on to this thread in the hope that I am completely wrong!
