I doubt that Levy thinks that way, on the evidence of every shred of previous transfer window experience.
If Levy thinks a player’s not worth more than £30m say, he’s not going to offer £50m just to get him, even if he has the money.
So I doubt that taking Bale on loan would prevent us from investing in other players if Levy believes those other players are a good investment and available at the right price according to Levy’s evaluation.
Obviously there’s an absolute limit to what will be spent in total, but Bale, providing he’s proven to be fully fit, will not be seen as much of a gamble, and the increased revenue he’d generate will go a long way to offsetting his cost.
Fuck me the possibility of a 29 year old Gareth Bale coming back to Tottenham and there are actually fans who who wouldn't touch the deal with a barge pole, I give up.
Honestly, £10 million for a year for Gareth Fucking BALE! Christ we'll get that for Onomah and if they subsidise his wages as well then the only extra expense is the difference in what we'd have to pay him and what we'd be happy to pay him ordinarily.
Absolutely right and if we don't get Ndembele it won't be because we got Bale that's for sure.Dont think anyone us advocating taking Bale if ut cost us Ndombele.
But if we were able to strengthen where needed then add that little stardust of Bale on top, why wouldn't you

I can live with him not being the Bale when he was with us in fact I'd settle for the Bale who won the Champions league cup final almost single handed last season, that'd do me.In fairness, he'll turn 30 during the summer and it's not necessarily his age but more the fact that he's got the body of a 60-year-old former stuntman
EIther way though, I think the issue comes down to what exactly people think we're getting. You've got some people who seem to think we're resigning the same Bale that left us when in actual fact he's nothing like that player any more for all kinds of reasons.

I'm not so sure that's true. We saw with Sissoko, for example, that Levy was prepared to pay over the odds (at the time it was) if pushed, and with Poch already making noises about maybe moving on, I think Levy will need to back him regardless of whether he personally thinks a player is worth X or Y. He has to if he wants to keep him at the club and he knows it. Either way though, it's undeniably going to be much easier for Poch to convince him to splash out on someone if he hasn't already spent big money on someone else.
As for the increased revenue, I'm not really sure how you've worked that one out. If you're talking about things like shirt sales we'll get nothing like enough from that kind of thing to offset 23m quid and the stadium is going to be basically sold out for every game next season regardless of who we sign so it won't play much of a role there either.

Edit: I ought to add I approach this story with a deal of healthy scepticism by the way.
Most seem willing to accept that he wouldn't play every game, pretty much no one is saying what you have. He is still an extremely good player and a winner, even if not at the heights of when he left us. Personally I think if we could get him happy and hungry we could even a bit more out of him than Madrid have over the last couple of years.
Would I want to lose out on a Ziyech or Pepe for him? Not at all. I personally love the idea of focusing our funds on CM and FBs and bringing Bale in on a one-off opportunistic deal to freshen the attack up however. I think Levy could write something like this off as a one off personally.
Like I say, if we can bring him in without that having any impact on us signing our main targets then I'm all for it. That's all I'm worried about. I guess we'll have to just wait and see.
What about he or one of them replacing Lamela/Lorrente on the bench...think it would give more impact.Do people here really want a loanee 30 year old taking a spot from one of Lucas, Son, Alli, Eriksen or Kane? Where do you fit him in?
Harry says he's a pretty good left back!He plays on the left..
Get our other business done first and then, late in the window, see if we can knock them down for a last minute bonus. Would be happy with that but not upset if we didn't get him.
Yes mate, that's a good point and I hadn't thought of it that way.I'd actually be tempted to try and get this one done early. Sends a message out that we mean business early on and gives Levy maximum time to explore the commercial opportunities. Could have an effect of potential new signings or contract renewals.
You would imagine if this happens though it would only ever be a result of weeks of Levy beating them down in negotiations!
