Basically we would have gone bust without the money. I think the sale was to reasure creditors that they would get their money, eventually. His injury in the cup final took £3,000,000 off the transfer fee though!

Without doubt Gazza was MUCH better than any English player currently playing or that has played since. He was an absolute genius. Two footed, power, pace, vision, skill, strength. I thought at the time and stil believe he would have gone on to be the best player in the world had he not been completely insane!
