Everton target Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins and Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt

Everton want to sign the Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins, one of a number of players who cancelled his contract at the club this week, as well as the highly-rated young Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt.

The future of Martins, 23, part of Portugal’s World Cup squad, is unclear with such widespread unhappiness at Sporting but he is likely to be available this summer. He is one of the club’s key targets identified by Marcel Brands, the new sporting director, and manager Marco Silva, who have not yet added a new player to the squad.

There will be a lot of competition for Martins, especially if he is successful at freeing himself from his contract. There are a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur who have expressed an interest.

It will be the same with De Ligt, 18, a centre-back who has also been scouted by leading Premier League clubs including Manchester City and could potentially cost as much as £50 million if any of the big hitters are able to agree a deal for him.

De Ligt is now represented by the Dutch-Italian agent Mino Raiola who has a glittering roster of clients including Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The teenager was thrown into Holland’s qualifying campaign early in his career and struggled in their defeat to Bulgaria but impressed in the win over England in March.

As for City, they are expected to focus their efforts this summer on signing a winger and a holding midfielder.

Both targets are ambitious for Everton, and potentially expensive, but having played down the club’s power in the transfer market it indicates that Brands is prepared to compete for the best young players who may not get gametime at Champions League clubs. Earlier this month the newly appointed Dutchman, formerly at PSV Eindhoven, said that Everton may have to sell players to make room for signings in their budget

Jorge Mendes should just get him along with Bruno Fernandes in at Wolves - they've already signed the Sporting keeping Patricio today.

That's what I'd do on Football Manager, anyway ...

Apparently being offered 35k euros/week by Lazio. Potential Anderson replacement.

This situation with these Sporting players is Levy's wet dream. I'd be very surprised if he's not trying to convince Poch that Martins or any of the others would be a good addition. If it doesn't work out we can sell them next summer for a tidy profit. No guarantee any signing will work out anyway, this is minus the financial risk.

No financial risk ? Don't you think his agent and himself will be licking their lips as to how much they can get by way of a signing on fee and agents fee as Spurs won't have to pay a transfer fee ? And what happens if we do a deal with them and later the court rules in favour of Sporting and Spurs have to pay a large transfer fee ? Don't you think there is a financial risk there ?

They will all come with big signing on fees, agent fees, wages for the duration, they take up a non-homegrown slot which we have none left.

Thought he looked pedestrian against the Fez. Isn’t he supposed to be quick? Portugal needed an out when under pressure and he was nowhere to be seen.

Good luck to him. Not really for us
Yep, as soon as we got Lucas this was a non starter. Think Lucas is a better player anyways.

Also, Atletico is going to be interesting next year. They've really needed to add some juice to their offense and they've certainly done that if they get this guy with Thomas Lemar already in the fold.

Will be interesting to see if he’s more of a Sadio Mane type rather than just another Gervinho.
