More pressure on the big spenders.

This. The amounts being spent at City and Liverpool, soon to be followed by United and Chelsea no doubt, means at least one/two of them will have had an absolutely awful season come next May.

They have absolutely no excuses at all to be finishing below us, which they all could end up doing.

If VVD is worth £60mill then big Toby A must be £90mill+ he is a defender that will vastly improve your defence.

Harry Kane actually abused him. It was nasty to watch.

Other than that I do rate him a lot, thing is, he's no spring chicken and has one very good season in a top league to his name.
Wimmer would look a billion dollars in Scotland for example.

Defending for Southampton is very different to defending for Liverpool. Lovren looked a very good defender at Southampton and suddenly became a complete mong in a Liverpool shirt. Safe to say, concentration levels need to be higher when defending less frequently. £50m+ and £200k a week is colossal money.

Jesus, them wages just keep rising for Liverpool, something has to give soon.
They're spending ~70% of their turnover on wages. That's nearly unsustainable as is, but every indication is that should be rising with Coutinho's big new contract and the offers being given to van Dijk.

I don't understand how it can continue without them imploding. FSG aren't a cash cow ownership that are going to simply pump money into the team like a Sheikh or a Russian mobster.

I think his Southampton stint was the anomaly. Lovren has been shite pretty much everywhere else he's been.
MoPo made that walking calamity a £20 million pound defender. We are very lucky to have such a great manger.

£200k a week for a centre back is crazy. Their wages are already excessive.

Can't see them doing much other business though if they put that deal together.

£52 million plus signing on fee plus £200k a week for 4/5 years is massive money.

You know you're spending too much when City baulk at the price:

Van Dijk 'not on City's A List'

Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer

Manchester City had an interest in Virgil van Dijk - but gather he was not on what you might call their "A List" of player targets.

And Manchester City were not prepared to go anywhere near sort of fee Liverpool are willing to pay - which could end up being around £60m.

Club are lucky to have assembled such a quality starting line up before these inflated prices kicked in

Our starting X1 costs the same as VVD and Salah

Toby's agent is rubbing his hands together and licking his lips at the prospect of Van Dijk getting £200k a week

Southampton will report Liverpool to the Premier League over an illegal approach for centre-back Virgil van Dijk, reports BBC Radio Solent.

The 25-year-old reportedly wants to move to Anfield if he leaves St Mary's.

The £50m-rated Netherlands defender signed a new six-year contract last year, having joined Southampton from Celtic for £13m in September 2015.

Liverpool refused to comment on renewed speculation linking them with Van Dijk on Monday.

Kolasinac to Arsenal confirmed then. Very concerning tbh, he's an outstanding left back.
I wouldn't know about that but that's not why they have signed him anyway, they've signed him because he is on a free. Never mind the quality feel the width.

I doubt that, this guy was pretty much the best LB in the Bundesliga - the fact he's on a free is just a bonus
