Surprised someone mentioned Ashley Young. Signed for Villa, had 3 seasons among the highest assisters then sold for a massive profit. Why wouldn't we want that?

Leandro, Jo Cole, Dean Sturridge, Tiago and Fabiano would all have been costly mistakes.

Really? I remember us being very strongly linked when he was at Watford and thought we had him.

We thought Watford were asking for a silly fee which Villa matched. Seemed like a bullet missed at the time but in hindsight would have been a good signing.

We were strongly linked both times

When villa signed him Burkinshaw was raving about how he was so good he would have built his Tottenham teams around him if he'd had him and all the papers were linking us with a move to him (west ham too ) but villa paid the money and to be fair it was an excellent investment and he played very well and generated a profit

Bullet dodged for the moment he went for after villa I agree though - we were also strongly linked at that time

So with him it can be looked at both ways

Yeah fair enough. He was a very tricky player in his prime. Reminds me a bit of soldado now. I love soldado, Still think he could turn out alright. But if he's off to athletico for the 20 million reported I wont be against it personally.
