Steve posted a thread recently about Spurs V ManYoo 1979 which reminded me of a goal that Hoddle scored against them in a league cup tie at WHL in 1979. I found it in this. Its the third one. Amazing goal. It all happened in a blur that night and WHL wasn't anywhere near full. I was 15 and there with my mates in the days when you could just turn up and pay at the turnstiles!!

Enjoy.

Ah my dad told me about this goal before, and how Hoddle flew through the air, both feet off the ground. Stunning strike. If Andy Gray was a commentator back then, he would have said, "Tikaboo son"

I remember it well. I was in Cornwall during school holidays and stayed up late to watch it on TV that evening. A fantastic strike from the most technically gifted player I've had the pleasure to watch during my 30 years supporting Spurs.

Grew up with my brother saying "he's not as good as Hoddle" to absolutely anyone I thought was good.

Didn't have the chance to see him live, but seen enough in videos and talked to enough people who have seen and played with him to appreciate how good he was.

One of the best English players of all time.

How much would he be worth on todays transfer market?

What a player. Oozed class.

I saw Hod play so many games, and the goals are the icing on a very remarkable cake - icing designed by Michelangelo BTW

to use the cliche, like all great players he bought time on the ball

when english football was overrun with neanderthal tackling and bully boy tactics, hod would be there controlling the ball like berbatov with wonderful technique, seeing passes on the pitch you couldn't even see from the stands and then executing them

beating players with a cute shimmy there or a neat little dinked pass there

above all he was one of those that kept the flag flying for football during some very dark times in our game

to use another cliche he was worth the admission money alone - indeed I've been known to phone up the club on the morning of the game (if hod had been an injury doubt) and ask if Hod was playing to decide whether I was going or not

ah those days when you could just wake up, look out of the window and think yep I'll go down the Lane today

(of course the dark side of that particular equation were the reasons why it was very easy to get into most games in the 80s)

Unfortunately the national mangers were also neanderthal twats, hence his paltry 57 caps, when crap like Ray Wilkins, Bryan Robson, Peter Reid and Steve McMahan were often picked ahead of him. Wilkins in particular pissed me off no end. I think he managed to get 90+ caps for passing side ways.

Hoddle was too advanced and technical for arse holes like Ron Greenwood.

I was going to post something similar to this.

The England managers couldn't seem to find a way to let skill into a team.

all those goals were great but the Watford 1 is ridiculous, that was a bit special.

Unfortunately I never saw Hoddle with my own eyes, but my father has made sure I know what I need to know from an early age. When he used to teach me how to play ball when I was tiny (he wanted me to grow up to be the new Glenn, as I'm sure most Spurs dads did at that time) he always tried to get me to do things that he'd shown me on some VCR recording of Spurs and Hoddle just before we went out.

That youtube video is a wonderful one, I've had it in my favourites for a couple of years. Fitting song, great sequence of goals, really gets the heart going. I long for the day when we have another player who deserves the adulation of our fans like Hoddle did. I love many of our current and recent players, but none of them are fit to clean Glenns boots.

right up there with our present attacking CM ......Jenas/Hoddle Hoddle/Jenas....too close to call

why must you drag the tone down with a comment that has nothing to do with this thread? this thread is one of good feeling and enjoyment of something special. even though I agree with your point, why does it have to be made here in a thread where everyone is agreeing, getting along, and enjoying something and someone special?

could you just for once be decent and delete that comment, and I'll delete this one subsequently, so that this thread can continue along the lines of it's intended purpose... i.e the adulation of our favourite son.

or is such humility beyond the great ToY?

It's great to see all those goals but my favourite's not on there. The one against Forest at WHL 1979/80 season. Similar to the ManYoo one but was kicked out by Daines (I think) and headed on twice before Hod volleyed it past Shilton from the edge of the box. It never touched the ground from 'keeper to 'keeper. Goal of the season.

Thanks Paxonite, that video really brought back memories. Hoddle (along with Ardiles, Crooks and Archibald) is the reason why I started supporting Spurs in the early 80s. I was very fortunate to have witness quite a few of these goals as I attended the matches then.

Glen was ahead of his time and today would walk into any of the teams in the EPL. I have to mention it but for those comparing Huds to Glenn can now see how far off the mark they are.

For those who mentioned the respective England managers that managed Glenn, I agree, they didnt have a clue how to utilise his skills as I am sure on merit, he should have been the one breaking Charlton's record, not Beckham.

Thanks again for the memories!

And judging by Harry's recent comments, none would even clean his boots these days. Hopefully our new look youth team can produce someone that special.

Hi TANY -yep wilkins was the one that got to me - how the hell he got more caps than hoddle ..

I remember how our game picked up in mexico 86 after wilkins was suspended and we played hod and reid in the mid

had bobby rob not took bryan rob to play in mexico with a dislocated shoulder in a sling (to our younger readers - yes this really happened in the era of post-war pro football) and taken mabbutt instead, we might have got summat really big going in 86

to be fair to bobby robson he was a good manager overall and when he first took over was gonna build the england team round hodd - but then hod kgot njured from a typical terrible tackle of those days and plans chnged etc

life is full of buts etc I know

but also some crazy decisions were taken by england managers in those days

greenwood's decision to drop glenn after his wonder debut v bulgaria in a qualifying match is right up there with the most stupid

it was such a shame for glenn and england that cloughie never got the england job instead of greenwood - cloughie knew football and rated hod massively - and he was of course a far better manager than greenwood who suited the 'FA blazer culture' of the time

There was in fact another Hoddle goal that stands out in my mind that i cannot seem to find a video of. It was against Forest at home around 1979 again.

The ball did not touch the ground since our goalie kicked it out.

I hope i remember it right but i think it was Aleksic from a drop kick, flicked on by Chris Jones, flicked on by Gerry Armstrong (or vice versa) and volleyed in by Hoddle from range over a despairing Peter Shilton.

If anyone has a link to that goal that would be great to share.

And i have just realised that the Blue Rooster already referred to it above. Oops!! :)

I haven't checked out the vdeo but i'd guess there'll be a few hod classics missed out - tho I'm sure it's a great vid and will check it later

one for sure won't be there because it missed the cameras - a home cup tie with bolton about 79 - i think the score was 1-1 and hod hit a long ranger that was apparently so outrageous that some people thought he didn't mean it - but he did all right - oh yes - I wasn't at the game just going on friend's and paper reports - it was astounding apparently
