I agree with Lamentor, Gomes is a much better keeper than Robo. The problem he has is that he doesn't trust his defenders and can you blame him. Put simply he's trying to do too much.

Gomes is doing the right thing by trying to play the ball out through our defenders instead of just launching it long. We don't have a very tall side and it would just come straight back at us, much better to try and retain posession.

I know I'm going to get slaughted for this, but the biggest apparent mistake he made was rolling the ball out to Ledly. Ledly was the one at fault not Gomes, if Ledly thought Gomes was going to kick it long why was he just a few yards outside the penalty are? Our defenders need to be making themselves available to receive the ball not just standing around like dummies.

No Iron. Gomes didn't kick it hard enough. You don't pass out to a daefnder at a pace he has to come meet it when you have a forward at a short distance away. Gomes pass was pathetic. I like gomes and i want him to stay and reach his normal level but that pass was retarded.

Given is a very very good goalkeeper though, wouldn't be a bad shout.

Given is in the top 8 gk in the country. My point is form what i'm lead to believe is gomes could be top of the pile. We're not going to go down, we're not going to finish in Europe so i'm therefoee of the mindset that 8th-17th place means virtually the same thing at the end of the day, stick with Gomes then. Give him unadulterated support and confidence.

I would much rather we stick with Gomes. All he needed saturday was a skipper to go and have a quite word in his shell like and say stop giving it out to people under pressure.

To a degree this is a problem all over the pitch. The way we defend sometimes is farcical. Sometimes our defenders and midfielders fuck about with ball all it needs is clearing. And did anyone see woodgate's clearance when Gomes had tipped onto the post - it was so feeble it barely got out the six yard box.
Goalkeepers will always take a completely irrational amount of criticism for being proactive. It took the media 3 years to realise that Robinson was shit and even then it was only because of a fuckup for england which wasn't his fault. He got away with being shit for years just because he kept his head down and hid on his line.

If you watch Gomes come for the cross in the first few minutes which I think lead to the corner that Bent sliced (not for the first time - he is even more ofa liability in our box than the opposition's) it was a really good call as their player was lurking ominously.

Against Arsenal last week you had the perfect comparison. One he came and didn't get went in and one he stayed on his line went in. Ironically they were the first two set pieces I can remember us conceding in the EPL this season. The main reason for that is we now have a proactive keeper.

I used to argue with DOW about David James all the time, and DOW (who is a keeper) would always defend him saying that defenders love keepers like that because they take so much of the heat off and maximise their advantage of being able to use their hands and jump into and through attackers (which defenders can't) unpunnished pretty much.

Of course the caviat being that they are decent keepers in terms of shot stopping etc. James and Gomes both are fantastic shot stoppers.

Having spent time watching Robinson and weighing up James it was probably the biggest u-turn I've ever had opinion wise re a player. I really rate James now. I think players like Gomes and James will save you far more than they will cost you. I already think Gomes has.

I really hope we don't ditch him. He just needs a pitch skipper to give him the odd kick up the arse when he does something like rolling a ball out to a player under pressure.

I agree with that about James. At Liverpool and Villa he was a lot like Gomes is now and to some extent at Man Citeh. But down at Pompey he seems to have cut out a lot of the gaffes he makes and pulls off some incredible saves much like Gomes. And it was under 'Arry that James produced his best form so hopefully he has the same effect on Gomes. I still think the octopus will become a big fan favourite.

Shame you have to spoil your post with your inevitable petty pop at Bent, B-C.

I see no reason whatsoever to be talking about a new keeper. A few errors and the press and pundits are getting on Gomes' back—because he's Spurs' keeper. Luckily, he's not England's keeper too.

As a shot-stopper, he's up there with the very best, and probably has the edge on Robinson at his best. As far as getting off his line goes, he's way better, or, more accurately, more decisive—and that's from a long-time Robbo supporter. Being more decisive will occasionally lead to fuck-ups. He's got to learn when to trust his CBs, and maybe the fact that he's been used to playing with midgets in front of him at PSV has something to do with that.

We have far more pressing needs.

Although I am the thread starter, most know my opinion of Gomes and I back him fully.
Bar a couple of hair raising moments, he is quality and a big improvement over what we had.

David James, was/is my faovurite goalkeeper when I was growing up ;-)

Gomes, who has pulled off some amazing saves, is getting pilloried in this thread.

In his first season in th EPL.

And people are talking about the midget, Given. The equally unpredictable and brilliant James (like4like if ever there was one).

I must go and look up my definition of "Fan". I'm clearly misguided.

Does everyone who is slating Gomes realise that he has been carrying an extreamly painful rib injury for the past few games, this could explain his wildness at crosses, especially if he's pumped up with painkillers and adrenaline to get him through matches.

The point, if missed, was that knowing Gomes is unfit / injured, like the Manager would normally do with another player with similar circumstances, is play a deputy.

The consensus was / is that Cesar is also unfit / not up to the job / gone shopping and therefore Gomes has to play. Which is bollocks really. For a premiership Club to be wholly beholden to the erratic keeping of an injured first choice keeper because there is not a back up available up to scratch.

Typical Spuirs really, if true. Either that, or the injury that Gomes carries is in check with a day glo plaster and so he stands on his own merits.

Yea I do. But it hasn't changed him. He was making the errors pre-injury.
