Jennings was in his prime AFTER we sold him, James at 27 was a write off, now he is 38 odd and everybody loves him.

.

HI BC :) - have to disagree with that, from 71 onwards PJ was awesome - many thought him the best in the world, he was never better for AFC than he was for us during much of the 70s

He was part of a renaissance at Arsenal and we were kicking ourselves stupid for letting my hero go to our arch rivals. We did lose out on his prime years but I'd suggest that was because of the superior defence that they had compared to ours.

Gomes' confidence isn't the issue. He's done this since his 2nd game

Hi PT :) well have to disagree - many of his prime years were with us - and indeed the best of those prime years were with us IMHO :)

I never saw him play as well for AFC as he did for us - tho admittedly I didn't see much of him for AFC - but he was a miracle worker for us

I stood behind his goal at The Lane during the relegation year and as I say, he was a hero to me. Gutted when he left but I thought he went on to become an awesome keeper behind a terrific defence at Highbury. I'm pleased he's of the nature that he's found his way back to his piritual home now with no hard feelings. He's where he belongs!

Gomes wasn't playing for PSv for a good few years for no reason. I'm not sure I believe the rumours that Harry doesn't rate him. He's got to give the guy and chance to respond to 'Arry's school of man management.

fair comment PT :) - but I saw PJ throughout his career from 1964 onwards and without doubt he was an awesome keeper for us for much of that time

to me he peaked around about 1971 and was never better for AFC than he was for us during those days in the early/mid 70s - a period incidentally (from memory) when he was voted footballer of the year by both the writers and the PFA - and not many keepers have achieved that -

and AFAIK he never received either of those accolades at AFC

he also won more trophies with us than AFC (albeit he was with us muuch longer)

I wish we would play cesar so that Gomes can get back to full fitness. He will prove the doubters wrong. Gomes is the reason we didnt get past PSV in UEFA cup last year. His save from Malbraunque was one of the best ive ever seen.

hi Jim :) it baffles me to this day why Cesar didn't play v udinese

I guess we can only surmise that an injured Gomes is still rated our best keeper - but JR should have rested him for the UUEFA - terrible terrible decision

I don't want to get involved in this debate as I'm not really sure where I stand. But, I will say that I don't think Gomes's confidence is the issue here. The real issue is how he makes the rest of the defence feel and at the moment I bet they have very little confidence in him, when the ball is crossed inot the box and this uncertainty will lead to confusion. I made the point the other day and Gary Mabbutt said the same thing yesterday, which is tht now it has been highlighted, every team we play will try and exploit the uncertainty he causes. So rate him or not, we'll find out in the coming weeks whether this is a blip or major issue. As every team we play will be dropping the ball in at the near post to temp him off his line.

Harry is sticking with Gomes and I believe Harry will get the best out of Gomes like he did with James.

Too young to remember him at Spurs, (Can't say that often these days LOL) apart from old tv footage, so not qualified to comment. However, all those fans older than me rued our loss untill Clem really.

Maybe he would have been greater, had he stayed at the greater club. I mean as Peter Cook said, can you imagine the smell if you had to work there every day?

This all depends on if Gomes can get his confidence back. Chelsea away he was fantastic, made some great saves and was brilliant for crosses too. But as we got worse so did he, especially after the Villa and then Udinese games and it's obvious his confidence has gone.

BUT if Harry can help him back to his best then he will not need replacing. Heres hoping...

Go back and watch the Chelsea game again. Then revise your opinion. It's mostly confidence at the moment.

Completely disagree. See the above answer.

But I haven't seen him show a lack of confidence. He seems to come for pretty much everything. Unconfident keepers tend to get stuck in 2 minds and end up staying on their line or coming too late. Gomes seems to fly out for everything as if he's Superman. The guy seems ultra confident in his ability if you ask me. As i said before, I think the real issue is how Gomes's handling of balls crossed into the box effects the defence. If they don't feel confident in their keeper it will cause confusion. I'm sitting on the fence on this one and think we'll just have to wait and see, but I'm sure we'll find out in the coming weeks and expect to see oppositon teams target our near post.

Gomes support

Redknapp has also given his support once more to goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who has been criticised for making a number of mistakes this season.

"Gomes has a reputation as world class. He's brave, makes decisions and goes for the ball," said Redknapp.

"He can be a big goalkeeper in the Premier League."

a little bit more support from redknapp.

IMO i think gomes is great he has no fear and just throws himself at everything, i seriously prefer that to robbo.

Is this thread naturally splitting into 2 cells; Gomes and Pat Jennings.
Maybe we should start a retro topical debate.

Did we sell Pat Jennings too early?
or
Is PJ the greatest ever Spurs keeper?

I would just like to say that I love Gomes! It's been great to see a Spurs goalkeeper trying to command the defence for once. He's vocal, he's brave, he's got an amazing throw, he's made great some excellent saves and he has been in a new team, how long? Up to the Udinese game he had probably been our best player. Now you'd think he was the reason we are bottom. Bentley had been very poor up to 'arry's arrival. Modric had struggled. Our defence has exposed Gomes 'umpteen times. Woody hasn't been perfect in the last month. Bale, Hutton and Ekottu are just returning from injury. King is in and out. Now the ever present Gomes has an injury and game highlights 'highlight' his errors and a lot of people are on his case. Yes, he's made errors but he certainly deserves more time with a settled confident defence and a good defensive midfielder in front of them. I remember the last goalie to join us from a top team, who had also had a fantasic defensive record up to that point. Ray Clemence made some really bad errors in the first few months but proved himself in the long run. Have faith ye of the Championship Manager 'lets just replace anyone who makes a couple of mistakes' ethos. Gomes can be great if we get behind him and don't undermine his confidence by judging him so soon. I like Gomes. Lets get behind our players, please!
