REDKNAPP NOT CHASING NEW GOALKEEPER

Posted 21/08/09 14:42

http://www.skybet.com/skybet?action=GoEvEv&id=11911097&aff=705 Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has insisted he is not looking to bring in another goalkeeper following the injury to Heurelho Gomes.

Spurs are still waiting to discover the extent of the thigh problem Gomes suffered in Wednesday's clash with Hull but he is expected to be sidelined for some time.

20-year-old David Button has been recalled from his loan spell at Crewe, while Carlo Cudicini will continue between the posts in Gomes' absence.

Redknapp has been linked with a move for David James after working with the England international at Portsmouth but he maintains that he is happy with his existing options.

"I couldn't do anything with David," Redknapp said on Sky Sports News. "I think he's a great goalkeeper but he belongs to Portsmouth and we're not in the market to buy another goalie.

"As long as Carlo is playing and he's fit then we're okay. We've got two top keepers, one of them is injured, but I've still got Carlo."

There are less than two weeks of the transfer window remaining and Redknapp says he has no plans to do any more business.

"We're not really chasing anybody," he said. "If somebody comes in and offers silly money for one of our players and it is something we wanted to do, then we may go and find somebody who would improve us."

Tottenham sit top of the Premier League table after two impressive wins but Redknapp has played down talk of a Champions League finish.

"To break into the top four is very difficult. We just have to take it as it comes and see where we end up," he stressed.

"We've had a terrific start but it is only two games. If we are still up there after 18 or 20 games then I think we'd all be getting a bit more excited but at the moment it is just a good start, nothing more."

Redknapp has challenged Jermain Defoe to replace Cristiano Ronaldo as the Premier League's top scorer after seeing the England striker beef himself up over the summer.
Defoe suffered a foot injury in January and started working on his physique - then continued his gym sessions in pre-season, resulting in his explosive form at the start of the campaign.
The 26-year-old scored twice for England in Holland and followed that up with a hat-trick against Hull this week, leading Redknapp to back his striker to top the scoring charts now Ronaldo has moved to Real Madrid.
"At the start of the season I tipped him to be an outsider for the top scorer, he is capable of scoring 20-odd goals and it's about time he did," Redknapp said. "With Ronaldo gone he can be pushing to be the top scorer.
"He's up there with the best in the Premier League when he is playing like he is now. He's so sharp - he's lethal."
Redknapp feels Defoe is no longer getting brushed off the ball following his work in the gym.
"He's come back stronger this year and looks even quicker with the power he has built through working with the fitness coaches in the gym," he added.
Defoe missed out on the 2006 World Cup - with Sven-Goran Eriksson famously gambling on Theo Walcott - but looks in the frame to be on the plane to South Africa at the end of the season.
Peter Crouch, who has started the season on the bench, also has England ambitions, while Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko hope to be at the tournament with Republic of Ireland and Russia respectively.
It means Redknapp has plenty of options in attack.
"We've got four top strikers," Redknapp said. "It's up to the England manager, and it's a long way until the World Cup, but Jermain is the man in form at the moment.
"He's got to play well because Peter Crouch is waiting to get in. He is a player England need badly for the World Cup.
"It's difficult when you have top players like Peter and Roman Pavlyuchenko.
"They are not used to not playing and I understand that. They will play. It is a long season and at times we may change and play three forwards. They give me options."
