He is a great keeper IMO. I think he is getting too many mixed signals from the coaches which is causing him to second guess.

He just needs to play his natural box game which is a human wrecking ball and trust in his ability.

It's getting harder & harder to back him I must say.

Most of us who saw Gomes before he came to Spurs knew his 2 faults as a goalkeeper, he comes for everything (he turned this into a huge positive at PSV) & his tendency to parry balls downwards when he cant catch them (it's very hard to catch these new balls BTW) instead of pushing them over the bar or wide.

He's caught in a difficult situation now.

At his previous clubs his style is to come for everything in the penalty box.
He was clattering defenders like nobodies business in Holland for PSV, but it worked & he was a hero

Harry's now told him dont come unless you're 150% sure & now he doesn't know what to do, he's fighting against his natural tendency & it's difficult to see how this is going to be fixed.

I still think he's a really good keeper but I'm starting to wonder if this League with maybe a greater percentage of crosses to be dealt with will not suit him.

Whatever he must be really close to the last chance saloon.

My post on another thread

"We are not employing any players on the posts on corners meaning the defending players are meant to deal with those crosses.

Hutton didnt even jump and gave their player a free header. You wont find Gomes in trouble with Harry on that particular one.

Jumping is not Corlukas forte either and the tall Dawson was nowhere on that goal."

agree...mistakes have largely been communication errors...stoke and sunderland are the only two which weren't that i can think of

Exactly my thoughts ! Get Sir Patrick Jennings out with him on the training field to teach him when to come and when to stay on his line. Nothing wrong with his shot stopping, just bad decision making.

Gomes was poor last night but has overall improved since the management change. I think we need to stick with him for now, I'm sure he'll improve.

In fact, he has played a lot better in previous seasons, so I'm sure he'll come good again. A rotating back 4 perhaps doesn't help gel our defensive unit.

He has to learn when and when not to come for crosses... but in the whole i'm pleased with him.

Anyone thinking about Robbo...look at the goal he conceeded against Kenwin Jones (Typical Robbo)

First goal yesterday seemed a little bit weird. It was like no one knew who was responsible for that area.....the ball just passed everybody. Could it have something to do with a CB-pair that has never played before

And the second seemed like Gomes went back to beeing uncertain like a few weeks back.....and missed it completely.

Well, i really like him and when he get's a chance to play togheter with the same CB's for awhile and grow confidence togheter with them things will be just great.

We clearly have issues defending from corners and set pieces and this is a weakness that goes way back into last season and possibly further. We used to slate Robinson for staying on his line and now Gomes is slated for trying to attack the ball.

We all have a tendency as spurs fans to support a player that we think is a decent guy that is having a tough time and Gomes seems to fall in that category. The thing is, how long can you carry on supporting someone if the "tough time" doesn't seem to pass? (Ramos situation a case in point).

The guy does need some coaching refinement in this area (crosses) but the players in front of him need to do their job too. How many times are our players going to be outjumped by the opposition anyway? Dawson let the ball get over him for the second goal last night, whilst their first goal was almost unchallenged by any defender and Gomes had no chance in correcting his position in time once the ball went by him.

I posted somewhere in the past that i thought Gomes was a bit of a clown at PSV (when we were rumoured to be interested) and regrettably he has not done much to quell that suspicion so far. The law of averages would tell you that if you come for EVERY high ball, you won't succeed in getting it EVERY time.

I hope that he turns the corner (quickly) but the team as a whole needs to take responsibility at set pieces and in particular at corners.

That aside, if we carry on out scoring the opposition then it doesn't really matter that much :)

gomes cant always be blamed for corners if they go in, if the defenders dont defend well enough and jump for it then theres going to be a chance of a goal, im happy with him in our team. We havent lost in 6 so im not worried, Gomes has made some incredible saves already this season that not many keepers would have gotten to. SO im happy with what hes done.

ok just watched the highlights again and the 1st goal was in no way gomes fault. No one went for it and jumped for it, thats a defensive fault and not gomes, the second one on the other hand gomes just didnt get to it before hyppia.

the second one was clearly gomes fault, he half came out, then tried to get back, the ball only hit plessis' face and bounsed in weakly. If he'd have stayed put it was a simple catch
