Just seen a Brum fan saying on SkySportsNews that he thinks they can score a couple of long shots today.

While this is naive (Gomes prob aint playing), it worries me. If fans think this about us, its a cert other teams do too. Which in turn, would mean our players will be thinking about it aswell.

What effect does that have on our team? Trying desperately to not let anyone shoot cos you have no confidence in the guy between the sticks. My guess is it would leed to silly tackles (free-kicks in dangerous positions, silly yellow cards etc) and our guys being pulled out of position creating space elsewhere. Generally not a good thought running through the core of the team ethic.

I love Gomes' amazing saves, but other than that he scares the crap outta me. I loved Robbo, but he too became a liability.

I'd like to see us go for Adler, if possible. German no-nonsense clear thinking level headed keeper. I believe that's what Spurs need 1st, then address the forwards.

Shouldn't every goalkeeper be targeted? Isnt that how you score?

He hasnt done his homework, Lampard and Ronaldo aside, this is one of Gomes strengths. He is vulnerable after making a save. When he saved the Pen against Blackpool, I said to my mrs at the time, no matter where they put this corner he is gonna come for it. They planted it high and deep, the rest is history...

You've got your priorities wrong. If we got a new 'keeper and no strikers, we'd still be toothless, but might loose less, but if we got strikers we'd win more games.

Gomes isn't a problem. He had a drop in confidence, but he's still been decent, and we'll struggle to get better than him.

I agree that new strikers are immeasurably more important than a new goalkeeper.

I love Gomes, but if he continues to make these kinds of mistakes he is most certainly a problem. Hopefully he can shake off this spell soon enough though.

I haven't got my priorities wrong, and I havent slated the guy, its just an honest opinion. Our strikers have been abysmal, and we need some new blood upfront, that is totally without question.

Gomes obviously suffers with confidence problems, you see him get away with something, and he goes into his shell, then I fear the bigger fluff will come, and it often does. Same as when he does something good, I fear he's gonna be over confident and mess up, and again it does happen.

I just think its important for any team to have a consistent performer in goal. I remember us playing PSV and thinking it was just a matter of time before their kepper messed up, those 2 games it didn't happen, but you can always see its there.

But the funny thing is, and I have made several posts to this effect: I have noticed in the last couple of months that when we are pushed back, our first bank of four are pushing out to pressurize the ball, as it is moved along the lne by the oppos. But when it comes to the second bank of four there has been very little pressure put on the ball, menaing the oppos can shoot form range, or pass through a sometimes static defence, with relative ease. That is just plain wrong, and puts so much pressure on Gomes. They should be doing wht you suggest as of course, not because they don't trust Gomes. Is it the chicken or the egg:shrug:

Shouldn't every goalkeeper be targeted? Isnt that how you score?

And this (though it is a message that seems to have bypassed our lot:roll:).

Gomes is having a rough patch but it doesn't help that we can't score for shit. when you have strikers that offer serious constant goal threats and when you are a goal or two up against a team it means that the pressure is off your own defense and keeper.

The best teams in the world typically have few periods in the game where their keeper is tested.

Any keeper under constant pressure as Gomes has been this season will struggle.

It also doesn't help that we seem to chop and change the CB pairing so much.

I'm not excusing his mistakes, but he isn't the weak link in the team.

Agree about the strikers thing: opposing teams only need to have 1 man marking Crouch but had it been a better striker they would have needed at least 2 players for that jobe - which means one extra man to use when attacking/putting pressure on the Spurs defense.
More points were lost due to impotent strikers than Gomes' errors.

Gomes may be a great keeper (I don't think he is) but it is very hard to shake off a dodgy keeper tag. Fans, press, teammates lose confidence in him and momentum goes against you it can be impossible to reverse. It might be best for him to go back to PSV, where they remember him being great, in order to restore his confidence to eradicate the mistakes which have frankly been diabolical.

I would gladly put Gomes on the bench and let Carlo keep for a while. I would even go further as making Carlo our first choice keeper. With Carlo our defense plays calm and relaxed, with Gomes they always seem to be on high alert as if something unexpected is about to happen. We all saw that Carlo could make those great saves too. But he also does not make silly penalties (Inter and Blackpool), knows how to hold his ground in the small box so he does not get bullied around, does not palm the ball in his own net (aka Drogba's goal in the home game against Chelsea), or does not let it slide under his arm (Chelsea away), does not block the ball in a way that allows Van Persie to volley it from 5 yards, etc or generally does not fall asleep when we put the other team under pressure and he does not see any action for 10-15 mins.
