Greg Stobart sheds some light on Tottenham’s summer transfer window
by Dan Kilpatrick - September 6, 2014 2:49 am

Goal.com’s Greg Stobart has written an enlightening round-up of Spurs’ summer in the transfer market.

For those unaware, Stobart is a journalist who has his ear to the ground on goings-on at the Lane. I once read that he knows Daniel Levy’s son or dog-walker or something. He doesn’t speak gospel, of course, but he’s probably more tuned into Spurs’ intentions than any of his peers so when he writes, it’s worth reading.

Stobart’s round-up contains nothing ground-breaking and nothing most of us couldn’t have guessed at but nonetheless it’s revealing, so I’ve relayed the most interesting bits below.

– Apparently Spurs were not prepared to give up any of last summer’s seven signings, who cost around £110m. However, Stobart goes on to say that Vlad Chiriches and Paulinho were for sale this summer, which feels like a contradiction…

– Ben Davies has reportedly been tracked by Spurs for a ‘long’ time, which presumably means our interest pre-dated Mauricio Pochettino.

– Danny Rose reportedly told Pochettino during our pre-season tour of the US that he was not willing to relinquish his spot as our number one left back without a fight. He has started the campaign ahead of Davies, of course.

– Eric Dier was strongly recommended by Tim Sherwood according to Stobart. Sherwood has already admitted that Dier was recommended to him by his former assistant Chris Ramsey.

– Upon arrival, Pochettino ‘immediately’ decided to sell Michael Dawson, who was offered to Hull and QPR throughout the summer, before eventually moving to the KC Stadium late in the window.

– Spurs thought they had sealed a £17m deal for Mateo Musacchio but the Villareal player’s agent refused to take cut on the 30 per cent of economic rights he owns in the Argentine and the deal broke down.

– We reportedly opened talks with Southampton for Morgan Schneiderlin shortly after the World Cup and were confident of sealing a deal in the region of £15-18m. We turned to Benjamin Stambouli when it became clear Saints wouldn’t sell, although Schneiderlin could still be targeted in the future.

– As well as Chiriches and Paulinho, Aaron Lennon was also up for sale but refused to join QPR on deadline day.

– The club did not want to sell Andros Townsend and rejected some ‘significant bids’ from Southampton for the 23-year-old.

– Lewis Holtby is ‘unlikely’ to return to Spurs from his loan at Hamburg says Stobart. The German club have an option to buy, of course.

– Spurs ‘explored’ the possibility of signing both Jay Rodriguez and Wilfried Bony and will probably target the former again in January.

– We were very disappointed to miss out on Danny Welbeck, having been confident of clinching a deadline day loan view.

So, there you have it. Remember, all of the above is just one man’s view and some of it is probably educated guesswork.

Aside from the part about wanting to sell and not wanting to sell some of last summer’s signings, it all makes sense though and it’s probably the closest thing to genuine ‘ITK’ you’re going to find on the web.

The Londoners signed six new players but the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as manager holds the key to the future at White Hart Lane

By Greg Stobart

Tottenham made the most important signing of their summer before the transfer window even opened.

The appointment of Mauricio Pochettino on a five-year contract at the end of May was the biggest decision chairman Daniel Levy has had to make in years.

Following the dismissals of Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood within six months of each other, Spurs decided to take a gamble on the inexperienced young Argentine who caught the eye at Southampton with impressive results and an attractive style of football.

A strong part of the thought process behind Pochettino’s appointment was his reputation as a top-class coach who could improve players. The club were not prepared to give up on their seven signings from last summer - at a cost of £110 million - and a big part of the new boss’ job is to bring the best out of players who failed to settle last season. Surely internationals such as Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Etienne Capoue were better than they showed in their first year in England?

Pochettino also buys in to Levy’s philosophy of buying young talented players rather than trying to compete with financially stronger clubs for high profile names or players with little sell-on value.

So the plan coming into the summer was to improve the squad without making the same wholesale changes that set them back last year when they tried to fill the void left by the sale of Gareth Bale.

Still, six players were signed - Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Eric Dier, Federico Fazio, Benjamin Stambouli and DeAndre Yedlin - while the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Michael Dawson, Zeki Fryers, Lewis Holtby and Sandro departed.

The early part of the summer was spent negotiating with Swansea over the deals that saw Davies (£10m) and Vorm (£2m) arrive with Sigurdsson returning to the Welsh club.

Davies had long been tracked as a potential new left-back and the club pulled the trigger to sign him to compete with Danny Rose, who told Pochettino during the tour of the United States that he would not give up his position without a fight and has started the season as first choice.

Dier, meanwhile, had been tracked ever since he spent a short period on trial in north London from Sporting Lisbon. The England under-21 international had been strongly recommended by Sherwood and the club decided to press ahead with the £4m deal to bolster their shaky defence.

One of the priorities for Pochettino on his arrival was to sign a new centre-back, with the decision made immediately to sell club captain Dawson.

Spurs thought they had clinched a £17m deal for Mateo Musacchio, the Villarreal centre-back, but after weeks of wrangling it seemed clear that the deal would fall through, with the player’s agent refusing to take a cut on the 30 per cent of economic rights he owns in the Argentine.

Eventually, Spurs accepted defeat in their Musacchio chase and quickly clinched a deal for Fazio by activating the £8m release clause in the 6ft 5in Sevilla captain’s contract.

It was a similar story as Pochettino looked for a strong central midfielder who would fit in to his high pressing game, with the 42-year-old desperate to re-unite with Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin.

Talks were opened with Southampton shortly after France’s exit from the World Cup and Spurs were confident of clinching a deal in the £15-18m range. Yet after Saints executives faced a backlash from their own supporters as players deserted the club, they performed a U-turn and told Schneiderlin he would not be sold.

Schneiderlin vented his anger and went on unofficial strike, training on his own and refusing to play in Southampton’s pre-season matches.

But it became clear that Saints would not change their stance towards Schneiderlin on a matter of principle. Pochettino would still love to sign Schneiderlin in the future but the club made a late, surprise move for Stambouli to provide some midfield steel.

Meanwhile, the club wanted to cut down a squad so big that several high-profile internationals could not even make the 18-man matchday squad.

Dawson was touted to QPR and Hull throughout the summer before eventually moving to Humberside after realising his opportunities would be severely limited following nine-and-a-half years at White Hart Lane.

Sigurdsson, another fringe player, had been used as part of the deal with Swansea while Spurs made it clear they would listen to offers for Holtby, Fryers, Sandro, Paulinho, Aaron Lennon, Vlad Chiriches and others over the summer.

As Levy tried to squeeze the pennies out of every deal, most had to wait until the end of the window to learn their fate.

With concerns over Sandro’s injury record, the Brazilian moved to QPR for £10m on deadline day - around the same fee that had been offered by Serie A side Napoli earlier in the window.

Holtby, another crowd favourite, left on loan for Hamburg and is unlikely to to return.

Wingers Lennon, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli all stayed at the club despite considerable interest. Townsend was the subject of significant bids from Southampton while Lennon refused to move to QPR on deadline day.

Pochettino was keen to add another attacking player to his squad to provide goals to complement Emmanuel Adebayor, especially after Roberto Soldado’s miserable first campaign in England.

Tottenham explored a move for Wilfried Bony while Jay Rodriguez will be a leading target in January if he proves his fitness once his returns from a serious knee injury.

One disappointment for the club was Danny Welbeck’s decision to sign for Arsenal on deadline day when Spurs had been confident of clinching a loan move for the versatile attacker.

Yet Pochettino is happy with his "unbelievable" squad and the likes of Erik Lamela, Capoue and Chadli already look like completely different players this season.

It has been a busy but understated summer for Tottenham, in keeping with Pochettino’s outlook. The club’s ambitions have been reined in and there are no demands on the Argentine to achieve a top-four finish this season.

He will be allowed to get on with implementing his playing philosophy and will be given time to build the team. They may no longer have the star talents of Bale and Luka Modric, but the new Spurs manager has plenty to work with.

I don't understand why we would not want to keep Holtby he is already a good player but I think he is going to be a very good player in the future. I wish he was in still in our team now to be honest could definitely do a job

This is so wierd to me as i struggle to find positives in Townsends game. I was a fan of him for the last few years but he seem to just go backwards in his development for some reason.

Would love if Poch could get the best out of Andros and prove me wrong, but he had so many chances to impress by now and continue to fail.

If that job is run around like a headless chicken, then I agree.

Last chance saloon for Andros to show he can be integrated into a team imo. Gotta be Lennon's last season as well (Jan move would be ideal).

All sounds fairly feasible, shame we couldn't have tied up a deal for both Musacchio and Schneiderlin, I would have been much happier having that extra strength in defence and midfield
I'm actually happier that we didn't sign Rodriguez, players can take a time to get their form back and sometimes never do. He'll get more chance to ease back into the PL at Saints and in Jan he'll be getting close to the end of his contract, we should be able to do a deal then if he has shown he's back on track

I am more interested in targets we might have got but didn't. Was Poch not interested in Garay? was he simply focussed at that point on Lovren or Musacchio? Why did he not try and grab Griezmann? was it again because he felt he wanted Rodriguez. Was there any truth in us demanding De Sciglio for Soldado and what does that say about Poch's feelings about our current full back options or Soldado?

Oh well it's all over now till January, lets just hope the new additions work well and Poch can get the other players he wants in Jan

As frustrating as he is, there's potential. Potential and raw pace, you can't teach the latter.

I don't rate Townsend and as plenty of people have said he's had enough chances.
But he's here now, let's see what Poch can do.

I Andros can regain his pace and confidence he can be the impact player that we are missing.

He has to learn to give the ball simple sometimes instead of just putting his head down and running into traffic every time. In theory it should be easy to teach but for whatever reason he's not picking it up. He has the talent just needs to improve his decision making.
Big few months for him to prove himself with j rod possibly coming in jan

I don't think he has ever been quite as head down as some make out. Something odd seemed to happen to him during AVB's tenure, where he seemed to feel that the onus was on him to make something happen. That can hopefully be unlearnt, now he is in a system where we don't just cling to possession aimlessly (though sometimes we still do a bit.)

Funny that JJ has said opposite wrt Dier. Good try though, Dim. Really. Valient attempt.

Tim Sherwood has won the premier league as a player, managed Tottenham Hotspur and overseen the clubs academy too. He is also paid very good money to voice his opinion on football matters, be it when working as a pundit or airing his views in a newspaper.

Yet some will take the word of a complete nobody who pretends to be "ITK" over InterimTims!

Poor old Tim!

So did Poch actually get anyone he wants?
This is the wrong question to ever be asking, particularly when you have a Director of Football set-up. It's wrong to make it into a Poch or Baldini thing. What would have happened is that positions were identified, the coach may have suggested some players, most likely Schneiderlin and Rodriguez, and there would be other players found by the scouts and the DOF that fit the same criteria, and then my guess would be that the coach, DOF, Scout (with maybe some input from the board re: funds) would discuss how to order the options. These players would then be systematically, and perhaps simultaneously pursued such that we fill the right holes. I would be incredibly surprised if any of the players that are bought, for the first team in particular, didn't have Poch's agreement.

It's a false dichotomy.

Still a shame we couldn't bring in MS and MM.

Hopefully we will use Andros to bring in Jay and MS one day (winter)
