Super swine - GG

"Before i start let me just clarify this is not an ITK post.

I was at my local football clubs gentlemans evening last night where the guest speakers were Dean Saunders and Paul Wilkinson (ex-boro midfielder now Cardiff City coach) and after their speeches they both mingled amongst the guests. Anyhow i managed to grab a few words with Paul Wilkinson afterwards and started quizing him about Aaron Ramsay a local boy from our village and also about our very own Chris Gunter. Now he was very reluctant to talk about Ramsay but did say he expects him to still be at city next season even if it means him being on-loan from someone so take from that what you will, anyway when it came to Gunter he told us that he expects this boy to have a massive future in years to come, as he has bags of natural energy and talent and the right attitude to go with it. Apparantley there was a game of tug of war between us and Everton for his signiture with us wanting to give 1 million up front plus the loan of either Rocha or Tommy Forecast for the remainder of the season, Dave Jones and himself wanted this option but Everton came back with a £2 million straight bid of which the Cardiff board accepted as in his words they were in the financial sh*t at the time. We were informed of this and without hesitation upped our bid to £2m. So it was up to Gunter himself to see who he wanted to join. Damien Commolli invited him up to WHL and to the training ground for the day and this was where he met Juande and Gus Poyet (putting to bed the theory that Juande doesnt get a say in who we sign). Gunter came back that evening and told them that he didnt want to hear what Everton had to say and that his heart was set on Tottenham and the rest as they say is history. I quizzed him a little further about his talent and he just said in plain english the boy is brilliant, he has a fantastic awareness of whats around him, great positional sense and is as confident on the ball as any of the Cardiff City first team or as any other players hes (Wilkinson) has played with. He said "mark my words he'll be a spurs regular within 18 months FACT"

He was Wales U21's best player against England a couple of weeks back, and that was at centre back. I remember the commentator saying that Flynn reckons his best position is CB and he'll be gradually moved there over the next few years.

Go Gunter.

I wonder if having Bale and Gunter in our squad might help us tempt Ramsay. Apparently both Utd and Liverpool are interested, but how many players have gone from the lower leagues into their teams in recent years?

Gunter's listed at 1.80m which is almost 6 foot, so he's just about big enough to play CB:

For me, he's one of that group of players for whom pre-season will be crucial. If he has an outstanding pre-season, then there's a good case for making him our utility defender on the bench next season. If not, then a 2-3 month loan spell to get some more first-team football into him wouldn't go amiss.

It's good to hear he's so highly rated by coaches who know him very well.

while we have Hutton and Bale, both are good .. Gunter could be good backup for them ( specially Hutton ) ..

also, i read something about a possible CB role for him (can't remember who said it) .. but if that's right, it's good to see him can fill any back line position which mean he can do O'Shea or Gallas when they played a big part of Fergusen & Mourinho for there selections bettween 2004-2007 ..

I was in Oceana in Cardiff on saturday night (where i go to uni) and was in vip for my mates 21st. Also in there were Rob Earnshaw, Gareth Bale and Chris Gunter with some of their mates.

Gareth was still heavily strapped but says he expects to be running again by pre season. Gunter was very quiet but knocking back hideous amounts of goldshlager, didn't manage to get a word with him but got a photo of the three of us!

Earnshaw on the other hand was trying it on with every bird in sight and failing miserably....

Didnt know there was a minimal requirement for the height to be a centre half.

Gary Neville was a CB in youth team football - in fact, he used to play alongside Judas for England youth. But Ferguson decided he wasn't big enough to play CB in the EPL. I just checked Neville's height: he's listed at 1.79m.

Of course there's no formal minimum height for a CB, but Rocha is 1.83m, and some of our fans thought he was a tad short for a CB.

Yeah i see what your saying. But take Gallas, a complete prick but also 182cm tall but a good centre half. All to do with jumping ability and timing.

I totally agree. If Gunter has a good spring and reads the game well, I think he's big enough to play CB.

Glen Johnson is listed by wiki as 1.80m, exactly the same as Gunter. And he played at CB in youth team football before becoming an EPL FB.

Gunter's only 18 and it's encouraging that coaches think he has the potential to play anywhere across the back four.

Yeah, think Gunter will be very very good utility player all across the back four, played a blinder at centre half for Wales U21's.

Agreed.

I see our very own Pascal Chimbonda is also listed at 1.80m, and as we know Chimbo has an excellent leap. I don't think you'd want a CB much smaller than Chimbo. Now, if only we could coach Pascal to keep concentrating for 90 minutes....
