At first I was a bit shocked; Berbs AND Keano leaving! The best strikeforce in the EPL, going their seperate ways so soon before the start of the transfer window!!
But as the weekend passed, and I started to mull it over, I began to think, "This could be sweet".
Mr Levy is a bit of a crafty old devil; he'll get absolutely top dollar for our beloved (well not so much now) strikers, and will probably come away with £40 - £50 million.
£40 - 50 million!!!! For two players in their late 20s? Surely someone, somewhere is taking the piss? Oh yeah, that'll be us.
Okay, okay, I know what you'll say; Utd and Liverpool are paying for tried and tested Premiership experience. But surely their money could be spent in more effective ways, on younger and more promising talent?
This is especially so in Keane's case. I like Keane, and think he's a good player. But he's not a £20 million player. For (at the very most) £5 million more Liverpool could bring in Villa to team up with Torres.
Anyway, less about our rivals' getting mugged and more about Spurs.
It has been said that we had enough money for Bentley and a DM player, before all this Keano Berbs craziness started.
If that was true then our midfield could look something like this:
Bentley
DM
Modric
Dos Santos
Second string
Lennon
Hudd
Jenas
O'Hara/Tarrabt/Bale/Gilberto
That's not such a bad second string (and we may even sign Capel aswell) - also, there's Zokora and a few of the youth team boys who will get a sniff.
It also means we can sell; Steed, Kaboul, Chimbo, TT, Ghaly, KPB and still have plenty of players for the season.
Also, the players who are left, are all experienced players.
From player sales, at a conservative estimate, we'll make:
Keano and Berbs: £40 million
Sunderland boys: £20 million
The rest (Gardner, YLP, Rocha, Ghaly): £5 million
So that leaves us with £65 million to spend on 2 new strikers, and anybody else we want to bring in.
Bloody hell, that's some war chest!!
If only the Toon were run this well
